v
What I Need to Know

Welcome to this module on describing the sources and uses of

electricity in our everyday life.

This module is designed to help you, learners, understand the topic

on electricity. It is designed to equip you with essential knowledge, skills
and attitude on the sources and uses of electricity.

HOW TO USE THIS MODULE

This module contains several lessons. To make the most out of
them, you need to do the following:
1. Scan the list of Learning Objectives to get an idea of the knowledge and
skills you are expected to gain and develop as you study the module.
These outcomes are based on the content standards, performance
standards, and learning competencies of the K to 12 Curriculum.
2. Take the Pre Assessment (What I Know). Your score will determine
your knowledge of the lessons in the module. If you get 100% of the items
correctly, you may proceed to the next module. Otherwise, you must go
through the lessons.
3. Each Lesson aims to develop one of the learning objectives set for the
module. It starts with an activity that will help you understand the lesson
and meet the required competencies.
4. Read and understand the content in the Lesson Information (What Is
It). This component contains the basic information that you need to know
to be able to achieve the lesson objective.
5. Perform the required learning activities. The activities and assessments
are designed to enhance your understanding of the lesson. Review the
lessons if necessary, until you have achieved a satisfactory level of
understanding.
6. At the end of the module, take the Post-Assessment to evaluate your
overall understanding about the lessons.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE
At the end of the module, you should be able to describe the
sources and uses of electricity in our daily life. S3FE-III-b-2

1
What I Know

Let us determine how much you already know about the

uses and sources of electricity in our daily life.

Direction: Read each item, and then choose the best answer. Write your
answer on the space provided before the number.

_____5. Electricity powers most of the things we use in our daily activities but, if
we don’t use it properly it may harm us. Which of the following is the
proper way of handling electricity?

a. Touching exposed wires.

b. Keep electrical equipment near from water.
c. Pull an electrical cord from the wall.
d. Ask an adult for help when using electrical equipment.

2
What’s In

Electricity is a form of energy like light, heat and sound. It may

come from batteries or an electric power plant or power stations.

In this chapter, we will learn the different sources and uses of

electricity and how it can be used safely in our homes?

Look at the picture below, where do you think our electricity come
from?

3
What’s New

Activity 1

Some things need electricity to work. They get their electricity from
batteries, electric socket or from a power supply.

Encircle ( ) the items that use electricity and put an “x” mark on
the items that do not need electricity to work.

4
Activity 2

Who’s Who? Look at the pictures below. Put a “√” on the box if
it is a proper use of electricity or electrical devices and put a “x” if is
not.

1. Removing the plug if appliance are not in use

2. Inserting plug with wet hands

3. Switching off lights when not in use

4. Inserting too many devices into electrical cord

5. Turning on the
television while
sleeping.

5
What is It

Electricity is a form of energy that makes electrical objects move

or change in response to the electricity flowing through them. This
happens when the electricity flows from an energy source, such as a
battery or an electric circuit, to an electrical object.

Electricity is one of the most important forms of power and energy

that people use. You use electricity in doing your daily activities.

Uses of Electricity

At home, we use many devices, tools and equipment that facilitate

the conversion of electrical energy into other forms. In doing so, we are
benefited enormously because electrical energy enables us to perform
many activities. Moreover, electricity is used every minute. You use
electricity from the time you get up in the morning until you go to bed at
night, or even while you sleep.

To use electricity, we must control its flow. Electric circuits channel

the flow of electric current. Electric Circuit needs a source of electricity
such as battery, a solar cell, or a generator. Batteries and solar cells are
useful for small portable devices. They are also used in cars and other
vehicles that do not have continuous connection to a stationary power
supply. However, most electricity we use in our homes, factories and
other offices is supplied by generators. The generators in power plants
produce electricity that travels over power lines. This electricity is fed into
the homes through wires that run through walls. Electricity is very useful
in our daily life.

How electric energy is produced?

Atoms are basic units of matter. Atoms are made up of electrons, protons
and neutrons. An electron has a negative electric charge. A proton has a
positive electric charge. A neutron has no charge. An atom holds its protons and
neutrons tightly, but electrons can move freely. Sometimes an atom loses
electrons. Then the atom has more protons than electrons, giving the atom a
positive charge. Sometimes an atom gains electrons from other atoms. Then an
atom has a negative charge.

6
Two objects with opposite charges pull on each other. This pushing and
pulling is electric force. This electric force holds the atoms in your own body
together. Rubbing two objects together can cause electrons to move from one
object to another. This movement of electrons is electricity. Observe the cat’s
hair; your hair probably stands up when you comb it on dry days. When you pull
a comb through your hair, electrons move from atoms of your hair pull toward
each other. At the same time, the charges of your hair push on each other, and
your hair move apart.

Sometimes electron jumps through air from one object to another. Then
you see a spark. This spark is a form of electricity. The lightning is a group of
very large sparks. During a storm, some parts of a cloud gain many electrons.
The negative charges can jump through the air as lightning. When you rub your
shoes on a rug, you pick up extra electrons from the rug.

TOP 10 RULES TO ELECTRICAL SAFETY

To play it safe around your home, just remember the rules and safety
precautions in handling electricity.

1. Do not plug too many cords on an extension outlet.

This may cause overloading that
damages electrical systems.

http://clipart-library.com/electric-line-cliparts.html
2. Ensure that all electrical cables are rolled and tucked
properly, as pets and unwanted pests may
nibble on these cords.

http://clipart-library.com/ratanime-cliparts.html/rat

3. Do not try to climb electrical posts.

seek help from able people like firemen
or linemen if you need to retrieve some
things that got caught up on these
places like kites, balls etc.
http://clipart-library.com/electric-line-cliparts.html
7
4. Pull out electrical plugs from sockets gently. Yanking
electrical cords out of sockets may damage the
appliance or cause electric sparks.

http://clipart-library.com/clipart/856524.htm

5. Stay away from power lines.

Do not fly kites or play ball near
electrical posts and towers to
and shocks.

6. Ask assistance from an adult you need

to use electrical equipment.

7. Avoid working near electrical wirings.

8
8. Inform your elders at home
about unprotected electrical
outlets to have them warned
about potentials risks of
defective electrical equipment.

9. Also warn them to watch out for the

hanging electrical cables and the
power lines when climbing up ladders.

http://clipart-library.com/clipar/wiringst/856304.htm

10.Place you electric appliances

and electrical equipment away
from moisture or wet places and
put them in storages with regulated
temperatures.

What’s More

I hope you understood the lesson well. You are now ready to
answer the following activities.

Guided Activity: List down at least five appliances found in your house.
Identify the source of electricity in each appliance. Give also its purpose or use.
Fill in the table below.

Name of Appliance Purpose/Use Source of Electricity

Assessment

Write B if the given material uses battery, DE if it uses direct electricity

and S if it uses both. Write your answer on the space provided for.

_____ 1. Cellular phone

_____ 2. Television

_____ 3. Flashlight

_____ 4. Radio

_____ 5. Washing Machine

10
Independent Activity
Put a check (√) mark on good practices and (x) for not good practices in
handling electricity.

_____1. Don’t touch exposed wires.

_____ 2. Ask an adult for help when using electrical equipment.
