Advances in Biotechnology: Essay template

Introduction: Do this after writing the BODY of the essay. Include:


 Something interesting about the specific issue you chose: for example a quote/ fact/ statement to get
your reader’s interest
 Your understanding of what the title means
 In support OR against
 An brief summary of what your essay is going to tell us

Body of the essay (main part): Include diagrams and pictures:


Paragraph 1: What is the context of the problem (The history, and what caused the problem). Explain the
type of biotechnology you have chosen. Scientific language.

Paragraph 2: Who/what does the problem affect? How? Why?


 Explain the positive OR negative opinions of the problem and the scientific reasons that support the
opinions.
 Evaluate both sides (+/-) of the problem you have chosen.

Paragraph 3: Choose ONE factor that is relevant to the problem you have chosen: ethical, social, OR political.
Discuss and evaluate what the science of the problem and solution has done to the ONE factor you have
chosen? You could include facts and figures (numbers).

Paragraph 4: What are the different solutions to the problem? Explain the science in the solution. Is the
solution effective? What are the +/- points? Use scientific language

Paragraph 5: How would YOU resolve the problem (dilemma)? What values did you rely on to make your
decision? What consequences do you see your decision has on the others involved? Could you personally
live with this decision?

Conclusion
1. Refer back to your essay title
2. Has science solved the problem? What else needs to be done?
3. Something interesting to leave us with a memory of your essay.
