From : Cynthia See
Subject :Vacation schedule
Date :April 3, 2012

Dan,
1 want to bring you up to the date of the vacation schedule for next month since several people are requesting leave
then. Lora Johnson wants to take off from the 1st through the 7th. Kyle Roberts asked for the following week, 8th through
the 14th. Both Sandy Greene and Tiffany Andrews asked to take off the week of the 22nd through the 28th. 1 have already

month. I will wait to take my vacation in July when, 1 hope, thp schedule here will be back to normal. You were smart to
plan your vacation for this month before everybody else starts taking off. You are leaving next week, right?
Let me know if you have any comments about next month’s vacation schedule. Have a good time on your vacation,

Each year more than 30,000 drivers and front seat passengers killed in accidents are not wearing seat belts whereas
failure to wear a seat belt contributes to fatalities. At a speed of only 30 miles per hour, it is the same as falling from a third
—floor building. Wearing a seat belt saves lives; it reduces your chance of death or serious injury by more than a half.
Drivers or front seat passengers have to wear seat belts in most vehicles, If you are 14 or over, it will be your
responsibility to wear the seat belt. If you do not, you could be fined. lt will be the driver’s responsibility to make sure that
children under 14 do not ride in the front unless they are wearing a seat belt.
Being thrown from a moving vehicle is the number one cause of death in car crashes. Staying inside the vehicle is
your best chance of survival. Safety belts are designed to keep you inside the vehicle, where there’s room to live.
However, you don’t have to wear a seat belt in certain circumstances. For example, if you are reversing your vehicle,
or making a local delivery using a vehicle constructed or adapted for that purpose. Make sure these circumstances apply to
you before you decide not to wear your seat belt.
In addition, certain people are prohibited to wear a seat belt because of their health. These people will not have to wear
a seat belt if they get a valid medical certificate from a doctor, but they should be able to show it to the police whenever
necessary.

Dear Susan,
I have just heard the distressing news about your mother. I was really shocked to find out how sick she is. How is she
now? Is there any improvement? Is she still in hospital?
When someone is ill with cancer, it is not only the patient who suffers, but the rest of the family as well. How is your
father coping? I know how devoted he is to your mother. This is not an easy time for him. I think your younger sisters are
still too young to really understand what is going on. Thus, it is up to you to be a source of comfort and help to your parents
at this difficult time.
Whatever happens, you must keep your spirits up. Do not give up hope. Modern medicine is very advanced nowadays
and they are always finding new cures. My aunt had cancer ten years ago. She underwent a lot of treatment but she is still
doing fine now, although she still has to go for regular checkups.
From what 1 remember, initially, my aunt spent a lot of time in hospital. I think your mother will also have to do this.
So, you will have to help look alter your sisters and run the house. I am confident that you will cope. You are a strong,
responsible person and I’m sure you will be able to handle it. If, however, you feel you need to talk to someone about your
problems and worries, remember that I am always here for you.
Call mc or write to me any time. I will also keep in close touch with you. Be brave and hope for the best.
Regards,
Yani

One evening last week, my wife and I were sitting quietly at home. Suddenly we heard a loud bang. I suppose the
old lady in the flat above ours was moving the furniture about. My wife was afraid that the noise would wake the baby. She
turned down the TV and a moment later we heard someone calling for help.
I ran upstairs. The old lady’s door was shut but I could see smoke coming through the letter-box and under the
door and smell something burning. “Ring the fire brigade.” I shouted down to my wife.
I banged on the door but the old lady took a long time to answer. I was turning over in my mind the idea of
breaking the door down when she finally appeared.
“I was having a bath,” she said, “when the water heater in the kitchen blew up. And I was getting dressed when
you knocked.”
I took her downstairs to our flat. Smoke was pouring out of the kitchen and the heater was in flames. Just then I
heard a fire engine arriving outside and the heavy footsteps of the firemen on the stairs. “It’s in here,” I shouted, “You
turned up promptly, I must say.”
When I got back to our flat, my wife was making the old lady a cup of tea. Soon afterwards, the fire chief came in
to ask a few questions. It turned out that the fire was not very serious and the firemen were already putting it out. When
they left, my wife went up with the old lady to help her clean up the mess.
When she returned, my wife remarked: “It’s all right now. Nothing was damaged except the water heater. But
wasn’t it lucky that Baby slept through the noise?”
She took the teacups into the kitchen and I heard her scream and the cups crash to the floor. When I got there,
water was dripping from the ceiling and forming a pool on the floor. The baby woke up at last and began to cry.

Thomas Jefferson was a statesman, a diplomat, an author, and an architect. Born at Shadwell in Virginia in 1743,
he was tutored privately until he entered the College of William and Mary. He was admitted to the bar in 1767.
Five years later, Jefferson married Martha Wayles Skelton and settled with his bride at Monticello, the
mountaintop home that he had designed himself and whose construction was to extend over fifty years.
Jefferson served in the House of Burgesses, Virginia’s parliament, until it ceased to function in 1775, Not a gifted
public speaker, he was most talented as a literary draftsman.
Sent to congress by the Virginia Convention in 1775, he was elected to the committee to draft a declaration of
independence from England. Although John Adams and Benjamin Franklin also served on the committee, the composition
of the Declaration of Independence belongs indisputably to Jefferson. In 1779, Jefferson was elected governor of the state
of Virginia, an office he held until Congress appointed him to succeed Franklin as U.S. minister to France. Upon returning
to Washington, he accepted the position of secretary of state.
Although Jefferson was Republican, he at first tried to cooperate with Alexander Hamilton, a Federalist who was
first among President Washington’s advisors. When he concluded that Hamilton was really in favor of monarchy, hostility
between two men sharpened.
Having served as vice-president in John Adams’ administration, Jefferson ran for president in the elections of
1800. He and Federalist Aaron Burr received an identical vote, but the Republican Congress elected to approve Jefferson as
president. The most outstanding accomplishment of his administration was the purchase of the Louisiana Territory from
France in 1803. He was easily re-elected in 1804. When he left office four years later, he returned to Monticello, where he
promoted the formation of a liberal university for Virginia.

Health food is a general term applied to all kinds of foods that are considered more healthful than the types of
foods widely sold in supermarkets. For example, whole grains, dried beans, and corn oil are health foods. A narrower
classification of health food is natural food. This term is used to distinguish between types of the same food. Fresh fruit is a
natural food, but canned fruit, with sugars and other additives, is not. The most precise term of all and the narrowest
classification within health foods is organic food, used to describe food that has been grown on particular kind of farm.
Fruits and vegetables that are grown in gardens that are treated only with organic fertilizers, that are not sprayed with
poisonous insecticides, and that are not refined after harvest, are organic foods.
In choosing the type of food you eat, then, you have basically two choices: organic, processed foods, or organic,
unprocessed foods. A wise decision should include investigation of the allegations that processed foods contain chemicals,
some of which are proven to be toxic, and that vitamin content is greatly reduced in processed foods.
Bread is typically used by health food advocates as an example of a processed food. First, the seeds then the grain
are sprayed with a number of a very toxic insecticides and pesticides. After the grain has been made into flour, it is
bleached with nitrogen trichloride or chlorine dioxide, both toxic. Next, a dough conditioner, usually ammonium chloride,
is added along with a softener, polyxyethelene. The conditioner and softener are poisons, and in fact, the softener has
sickened and killed experimental animals.
A very toxic antioxidant is now added, along with coal tar, a better-like yellow dye. Finally calcium propionate, an
antifungal compound is added to keep the bread from getting moldy. Other foods from the supermarket would show a
similar pattern of processing and preserving. You see, we buy our food on the basis of smell, color, and texture, instead of
vitamin content, and manufacturers give us what we want even if it is poisonous.
