CE-308 Design of Steel Structures (Theory Class)

Analysis and Design Project

Problem statement: There are small villages along the banks of the river Jhelum close to Sri Nagar Road
in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (as shown in Figure 1). The people of these villages generally need to go
across the river to meet their relatives living on the opposite side and to purchase grocery and related items
as well. The previous means of bridge was an old bridge which has been damaged and is unreliable. A
national charity organization with the support of the local government initiated the step to build a
permanent pedestrian bridge comprising of steel trusses, keeping in view the safety and reliability.

Objective and Scope: The river flows through this region in a gorge with a varying depth from 100-300
feet. The selected location of the bridge site at Chinari has a width of 35m between the two ends of the
river as shown in the schematic sketch below (Figure 2). The bridge may comprise of two trusses as
supporting structures for a deck made up of timber planks. Assume that the trusses are simply supported
and the load on the deck is equally distributed between the two trusses. Therefore, only one truss needs to
be designed which will be replicated on the other side of the deck. The load to be considered for the design
of the pedestrian bridge is due to the people walking over it with their daily grocery items as well as
occasional gifts for their relatives. To maintain safety for pedestrians, the side railings will be welded with
the vertical/inclined members of the truss, making it necessary for the deck to be at the level of bottom
chords of the trusses. Since this bridge is over a gorge; therefore, wind loads needs to be considered in the
design accordingly. Further, this area lies in high seismic zone and has seen devastation in 2005 Kashmir
earthquake. Your services are required for the design of the truss and its members only. You can happily
leave the connections (welded connections) and supports design for another volunteer.

Key date for the submission of project

❑ Submission of complete project - (12th week)

Report format of the project

The students are required to prepare and submit the project report on the following pattern:

Chapter 1- Introduction

Problem statement, location and importance, requirements or limitation if any, paste pictures of site etc.

Chapter 2-Conceptual design of bridge

Type and shape of truss, possible reason for choosing the type

Chapter 3-Loadings on truss bridge

Mentioning the values of considered dead, live, wind, earthquake loads

Mention the code or reason for choosing the particular value of load

Chapter 4-Modelling of truss bridge using software

Modelling can be carried out in any commercial software like SAP2000 or STAAD Pro or AutoDesk
Robot or Tekla Structures etc. ,

Mentioning the steps in modelling with screen shots for modelled truss bridge

Reporting steps in modelling in the software

Chapter 5-Strucutral analysis results

Mention step by step procedure of analysis in the software with screenshots.

Report analysis result, member forces in the truss members under different load combinations

Provide screen shots, different views of truss under load combinations

Chapter 6-Design of bridge truss members

Design can be carried out either manually from the analysis result of modelled truss in the software or it
can be carried out in the software. In case software is used for design, mention the step-by-step procedure
for design in the software.

Screen shots of bridge truss with member mentioned on it with their designations

Provide a table, mentioning the designations of top, bottom, inclined and vertical members.

Generally double angle or double channel sections are used except when both these are not enough to
support the load then I-section profiles can be used.
