kinetoscope
The early projection of motion pictures was
done in a device with a large cabinet pierced
with an eye hole called kinetoscope.
The kinetoscope has a motor inside that
makes the film strip move along in a loop,
supported by an electric bulb for illumination.
People who would watch the motion picture
needs to look into the peephole and watch as
the still images move.

The director controls the dramatic idea

and artistic concept of a film. He also
visualizes the screenplay and guides the
emotions on every set or take.

screenplay or the script’s emotions
and make it come to life.
This is the director’s vision captured in

each scene through camera angles
and movements, lighting, and other
effects that will make the vision a
reality.

shots in a film and carefully weaving
the chosen cuts to achieve the
director’s vision and effects.

props, costumes, lights, and other

Animated films
These are digitally-made films using 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional
animations.
Biographical films
These are films that depicts the life of a real person. These are based on historical
facts and figures.
Documentary films
These are non-fiction films and short productions about real-life situations or
phenomena. These are often used to present, investigate, and promote awareness
about a case, a scenario or an issue.
Epic films
These are films made to depict the life, works and adventures of a heroic character
based on literature.
Fantasy films
These are films set to fantasy themes which mostly involves magic, supernatural
phenomenon or mythical creatures from the fantasy world.
SCIENCE FICTION FILMS

These are films set to themes about science and technology such as space
exploration, futuristic technology, cloning, cybernetics, time travel and many more.
Horror films
These are films that gives fear to the audience for entertainment purposes.
Musical films
These are films where songs are included as part of their narrative or
script and musical and dance performances are used to advance the plot.
Thriller films
This is a broad film genre where audience can experience thrill, suspense
and excitement.
War films
These are mostly historical-based films depicting battles and warfare and the lives and
experiences of soldiers and families during war time.

What is film in the Philippines today?
Film in the Philippines used to face a lot of serious

problems. After the 1997-98 worldwide economic
downturn, film has had a short-lived rebirth. In 1999,
the Philippines used to be the fourth largest film
producer in the world, but the number had dwindled
poorly to 89 in 2001.
