Geometry Concepts in Architectural Design
Geometry is the fundamental science of forms and their order. The building blocks of
architectural design are geometric figures, forms, and transformations. Geometric rules based on
the concepts of proportions and symmetry have served as stable design tools throughout the
history of building. The history of architecture will be used as an example to study the role of
geometry in architectural design processes. For architectural design, new geometric backgrounds
and successful strategies are required.

In the history of architecture, the idea of harmony is regarded as a key compositional

premise. Harmony and order are the foundations of composition as aesthetic concepts. To show
harmony different approach or principles like Pythagoras, Alberti, Kepler and Golden section
can be used. These principles are taken from nature, art and also mathematics to create harmony
from geometrical figures.

Another fundamental concept of symmetry is closely connected with the idea of

harmony. The mathematical symmetry concept of today was developed in the context of
crystallography. Symmetry now is understood as the invariance under a certain kind of
transformation. Space perception and experience have an influence to the architectural space.
The architectural space is based on a geometrical space conception. Geometry is present in the
shape of buildings and shape of drawings, but it much more than that.

Even though geometry and architecture are two very separate sciences, there are various
methods to understand their link from both an architectural and a geometrical perspective, as
well as to actually experience and use it when designing buildings. Architects use geometry to
study and divide space as well as draft detailed building plans. Builders and engineers rely on
geometric principles to create structures safely. Designers apply geometry (along with color and
scale) to make the aesthetically pleasing spaces inside. Applying geometry in design is
unavoidable.
