ABSTRACT

Internet of Things (IoT) conceptualizes the idea of remotely connecting and monitoring real world objects
(things) through the Internet [1]. When it comes to our house, this concept can be aptly incorporated to make
it smarter, safer and automated. This IoT project focuses on building a “SMART HOME AUTOMATION
SYSTEM” which is mainly concerned to design a system that allows users, upon authentication, to remotely
control and monitor multiple home appliances using a cell-phone based interface. The leverage obtained by
prefering this system over the similar kinds of existing systems is that the alerts and the status sent by the wifi
connected microcontroller managed system can be received by the user on his phone from any distance
irrespective of whether his mobile phone is connected to the internet. The microcontroller used in the current
prototype is the TI-CC3200 Launchpad board which comes with an embedded micro-controller and an
onboard Wi-Fi shield making use of which all the elctrical appliances inside the home can be controlled and
managed.

Internet of things has been governing the electronics era with cloud services dominating the ever increasing
electronics product segment. By using this we can switch on or off the lights or fans automatically when we
are outside. This proposes a smart home automation system based on Open source cloud server “things
speak.com” and a low cost esp8266 Wi-Fi module.

The System transmits an alert signal to the Open source cloud which provides a alert signal on the users
mobile phone. The system employs a second esp8266 module which is programmed to act as a web server,
which allows the user to activate or deactivate the security system by means of any device with internet.

Smart connectivity with existing networks and context-aware computation using network resources is an
indispensable part of IoT. With the growing presence of Wi-Fi and 4G-LTE wireless Internet access, the
evolution towards ubiquitous information and communication networks is already evident. However, for the

1
Internet of Things vision to successfully emerge, the computing paradigm will need to go beyond traditional
mobile computing scenarios that use smart phones and portables, and evolve into connecting everyday
existing objects and embedding intelligence into our environment. For technology to disappear from the
consciousness of the user, the Internet of Things demands: a shared understanding of the situation of its users
and their appliances, software architectures and pervasive communication networks to process and convey the
contextual information to where it is relevant, and the analytics tools in the Internet of Things that aim for vi
autonomous and smart behavior. With these three fundamental grounds in place, smart connectivity and
context-aware computation can be accomplished.

A radical evolution of the current Internet into a Network of interconnected objects that not only harvests
information from the environment (sensing) and interacts with the physical world (actuation/
command/control), but also uses existing Internet standards to provide services for information transfer,
analytics, applications, and communications. Fueled by the prevalence of devices enabled by open wireless
technology such as Bluetooth, radio frequency identification (RFID), Wi-Fi, and telephonic data services as
well asembedded sensor and actuator nodes, IoT has stepped out of its infancyand is on the verge of
transforming the current static Internet into a fully integrated Future Internet.

INTRODCTION TO INTERNET OF THINGS (IoT)

Anyone who says that the Internet has fundamentally changed society may be right, but
at the same time, the greatest transformation actually still lies ahead of us. Several new
technologies are now converging in a way that means the Internet is on the brink of a
substantial expansion as objects large and small get connected and assume their own web
identity.

Following on from the Internet of computers, when our servers and personal computers
were connected to a global network, and the Internet of mobile telephones, when it was
the turn of telephones and other mobile units, the next phase of development is the
Internet of things, when more or less anything will be connected and managed in the
virtual world. This revolution will be the Net’s largest enlargement ever and will have
sweeping effects on every industry — and all of
our every day lives.

Smart connectivity with existing networks and context-aware computation using network
resources is an indispensable part of IoT. With the growing presence of Wi-Fi and 4G-

A radical evolution of the current Internet into a Network of interconnected objects that

7
HISTORY

In early 1982 the concept of the network of smart devices was discussed, with a
modified Coke machine. This coke machine is modified at “Carnegie Mellon
University” and becoming the first Internet-connected appliance. This machine was able
to report its inventory and whether newly loaded drinks were cold.

In 1994 Reza Raji explained the idea of IoT as “small packets of data to a large set
of nodes, so as to integrate and automate everything from home appliances to entire
factories”. After that many companies proposed various solutions like Microsoft’s at
Work or Novell’s Nest. Bill Joy proposed Device to Device (D2D) communication as a
part of his “Six Webs” frameworks at the World Economic Forum at Davos in 1999.

The thought of Internet of Things first became popular in 1999. British entrepreneur
Kevin Ashton first used the term Internet of Things in 1999 while working at Auto-ID
labs. Besides that near field communication, barcode scanners, QR code scanners and
digital watermarking are the various devices which are working on IoT in the present
scenario.

8
DEFINITION

“Today computers and the Internet are almost wholly dependent on human beings for
information. Nearly all of the roughly 50 petabytes (1 petabyte=1015 bytes) of data
available on the Internet were first captured and created by human beings by typing,
pressing a record button, taking a digital picture, or scanning a bar code. Conventional
diagrams of the Internet leave out the most numerous and important routers of all -
people. The problem is, people have limited time, attention and accuracy all of which
means they are not very good at capturing data about things in the real world. And that's a
big deal. We're physical, and so is our environment … You can't eat bits, burn them to
stay warm or put them in your gas tank. Ideas and information are important, but things
matter much more. Yet today's information technology is so dependent on data originated
by people that our computers know more about ideas than things. If we had computers
that knew everything there was to know about things using data they gathered without
any help from us we would be able to track and count everything, and greatly reduce
waste, loss and cost. We would know when things needed replacing, repairing or
recalling, and whether they were fresh or past their best. The Internet of Things has the
potential to change the world, just as the Internet did or even more.

ARCHITECTURE OF INTERNET OF THINGS

Architecture of internet Of Things contains basically 4 layers:

 Application Layer
 Gateway and the network layer
 Management Service layer
 Sensor layer

APPLICATION LAYER:

 Lowest Abstraction Layer

 With sensors we are creating digital nervous system.
 Incorporated to measure physical quantities
 Interconnects the physical and digital world
 Collects and process the real time information

GATEWAY AND THE NETWORK LAYER:

 Robust and High performance network infrastructure

 Supports the communication requirements for latency, bandwidth or security
 Allows multiple organizations to share and use the same network independently

MANAGEMENT LAYER:

 Capturing of periodic sensory data

 Data Analytics (Extracts relevant information from massive amount of raw data)
 Streaming Analytics (Process real time data)
 Ensures security and privacy of data.

10
SENSOR LAYER:

 Provides a user interface for using IoT.

 Different applications for various sectors like Transportation,
Healthcare, Agriculture, Supply chains, Government, Retail etc.

11
APPLICATIONS

There are several application domains which will be impacted by the emerging
Internet of Things. The applications can be classified based on the type of network
availability, coverage, scale, heterogeneity, repeatability, user involvement and impact.
We categorize the applications into four application domains:
(1) Personal and Home
(2) Enterprise
(3) Utilities
(4) Mobile

There is a huge crossover in applications and the use of data between domains. For
instance, the Personal and Home IoT produces electricity usage data in the house and
makes it available to the electricity (utility) company which can in turn optimize the
supply and demand in the Utility IoT. The internet enables sharing of data between
different service providers in a seamless manner creating multiple business opportunities.

1.Colour sorting machine

13
As the name suggests, color sorting is simply to sort the things according to their color. It can be easily done
by seeing it but when there are too many things to be sorted and it is a repetitive task then automatic color
sorting machines are very useful.  These machines have color sensor to sense the color of any objects and after
detecting the color servo motor grab the thing and put it into respective box. They can be used in different
application areas where color identification, color distinction and color sorting is important. Some of the
application areas include Agriculture Industry (Grain Sorting on the basis of color), Food Industry, Diamond
and Mining Industry, Recycling etc. The applications are not limited to this and can be further applied to
different industries.

Most popular sensor for detecting the colors is TCS3200 color sensor. We previously used TCS3200 sensor
with Arduino to get the RGB component (Red, Green, Blue) of any color and also interfaced it with Raspberry
Pi for detecting the color of any object.

Here in this tutorial we will make a color sorting machine using a color sensor TCS3200, some servo
motors and Arduino board. This tutorial will include the sorting of colored balls and keeping them in the
relevant color box. The box will be in the fixed position and the servo motor will be used to move the sorter
hand to keep the ball in the relevant box.

2) Covid Band
14
The solution that I propose also uses signal strength for calculating the distance between two people, but
my device features improved accuracy and also less false alerts than the previous solutions.

My Arm Band would consist of ATtiny85 chip with two BLE HM-10 devices, it detects other similar
Arm Bands. The Arm Band measures the RSSI value of other devices around it and calculates the exact
of the other devices through the RSSI value. And whenever both the devices are close to each other
(<1m) it would activate the vibration motor and alert the user to maintain distance.

My Arm Band is very different from the existing solutions, it detects the people wearing the Band and
detects people from all sides (including the and back and the sideways). People only use a device if it is
easy to use. My Arm Band is lightweight, small, and wearable with long battery life (about a week) since
it works like a Beacon device.

Working Principle

The devices consist of 2 HM-10, one scans other BLE devices, while the other one sends advertising
packets for other devices to detect. Since it works as a beacon the battery consumption is very less.

The device is worn on the upper arm, so only if a clear line of sight between other similar devices is
there then only it will detect other devices and also since everyone using my device will use the same
hardware so the measured RSSI values for every device is same and most of the time it gives a consistent
reading.

Since a clear line of sight is obtained in my device, so the signal disruption due to noise and environment
conditions is minimized.

3) Health Band

15
Is your loved one old and living alone? No need to worry. Using Infineon's DPS310 pressure sensor we
developed a virtual assistant that neatly fits around your arm in the form of a band, which takes care of
this time consuming job leaving your love ones is safe hands!

"The elderly currently represent about 14.5 percent of the U.S. population, and by 2030 there will be
about 74 million older individuals. As healthcare costs escalate and pressures are placed on healthcare
institutions to provide adequate care, new solutions to managing senior health are imperative."

After a quick search and having seen the shocking numbers this is our attempt to help the elderly!

THE STORY

It's been a few years since my grandma has been suffering from the early signs of Alzheimer's and
unfortunately her condition seems to be deteriorating. This resulted in series of unexpected problems
such as

1) wandering off to work (even though she was advised not to)

2) skipping her meals or sometimes having double meals

3) not doing her exercises

All this due to the lack of memory and also her unawareness of her condition.

This led to my mother needing to be with her almost the whole day long, seven days a week. This task
proved to be very tiring and time consuming. That was when we got the idea to make a virtual assistant
that could monitor my grandma's behavior and activities, and if needed could also alert a family member
in case of an emergency. Giving my mother a break and at the same time keeping the patient in safe
hands!

4) Medicine Box

16
Many medical errors are due to the fact that people in charge of patient or elder's medication have to deal with
sorting huge amounts of pills each day. This paper consists on the conception, design and creation of a pillbox
prototype intended to solve this deficiency in the medical area as it has the ability of sorting out the pills by
itself as well as many other advanced features, with this device being intended to be used by hospitals or
retirement homes. This medication pill box is focused on patients who frequently take medications or vitamin
supplements, or attendants who deal with the more seasoned or patients. Our smart pill box is programmable
that enables medical caretakers or clients to determine the pill amount and timing to take pills, and the service
times for every day. Our shrewd pills box contains nine separate sub-boxes. In this manner, medical caretakers
or clients can set data for nine distinct pills. At the point when the pill time has been set, the pillbox will
remind clients or patients to take pills utilizing sound and light. The warning of pills should be taken will be
shown by an android application which is held by the patient. Contrasted and the conventional pill box that
requires clients or attendants to stack the crate each day or consistently. Our shrewd pill box would essentially
discharge medical attendants or clients' weight on much of the time preloading pills for patients or clients and
overlook the measurements which must be taken.

5) LDR Sun Tracking System

17
This project presents an open hardware/software test bench for solar tracker. The proposed prototype is
based on a dual-axis solar tracker controlled with Arduino Uno which is an open-source prototyping
platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. The solar tracker can be controlled automatically
with the help of LightDependent Resistor (LDR) sensors or manually using a potentiometer. Moreover,
this test bench provides virtual instrumentation based on Excel in which its solar tracker data can be
recorded and presented. The hardware used has been chosen to be inexpensive, compact and versatile.
The proposed test bench is designed to help students develop their understanding of control theory and
their application.

Arduino Solar Tracker

The proposed test bench is presented in Fig. 1. It is based on a solar tracker that can rotate automatically
to track the sun with the help of four LDR sensors and two servomotors (SM1 and SM2), or manually
using a potentiometer. To switch between the two modes (automatic and manual), a push-button is used.
Another push-button is used to link either the SM1(up-down servomotor) or SM2 (left-right servomotor)
to the potentiometer to control their movement. Moreover, a computer is used as a virtual instrument to
visualize the mode and current, voltage and power of the PV panel according to time in MS Excel.
Arduino Uno board is utilized to implement all software requirements of the system.

6) Floor Cleaning Robot

18
Automatic floor cleaners are nothing new, but they all share a common problem. They all are too expensive
for what they do. Today, we will make a Automatic Home cleaning Robot that only costs a small fraction of
the ones in the market. This Robot can detect the obstacles & objects in front of it and can continue moving,
avoiding the obstacles, until the whole room is cleaned. It has a small brush attached to it to clean the floor.
Description : This is a Semi Autonomous Robotic car that cleans floors using water and soup. The main
purpose of making this project to solve the problem of time consuming tiring, tedious and monotonous
job of cleaning of Floors. It has two modes:
Semi Autonomous Mode
Manual mode
Bluetooth Module(HC-05): This module will help for wireless communication between Arduino and any
Bluetooth application. I have used Blynk as my Bluetooth application because its very easy to use.
Relay Module : This module has an important role in controlling Water Pump Motor and Cleaning
Motor. we will be using 1 Relay for each motor.
Motor Driver(L298N/L293D): This will be used for controlling the speed and direction of two motors
BLYNK APP: This will be used for controlling the Robot Manually as well as to switch its modes i.e
from manual to autonomous or vice versa. if you dont know anything about this app check for its tutorial
at this link

7) Smart Ration System

19
Today’s ration distribution system faces many challenges and lots of issues like illegal smuggling and
corruption of goods happens in the ration distribution centers in India. These controversies include
irregular measurement of the goods, wrong entries in the manual stock register. Other times the actual
goods provided by the government for the distribution does not reach the common people. In our project
we have replaced the manual work done in the distribution centers by smart measuring automated
electronic and secured device by entering the Aadhar number which is provided by the government. With
the help of Arduino microcontroller which measures the goods accurately and updates it in data base
periodically about the availability of goods and information regarding the transactions done in a digitalized
manner. Here, to have access to the information and data regarding the stock a main data base is created
which can be access by both common consumers of that particular locality and by the government main
stream invigilators for distribution centers from their head office. Therefore, this project ensures
corruption free ration centers working system which will also enhance the direct communication of the
consumers with the government and will defiantly provide transparency.

8) Smart Locking System

20
The arduino based RFID door lock system is secure and responsive as compared to other systems. With
the use of arduino, it becomes much easy to design. Program a code and upload it to arduino just like a
plug and play device. It is simple and cost efficient project and can be used as a basic access control
mechanism. Their main advantage is contactless communication and RFID tags can work in any
environmental conditions.

mechanism. Their main advantageis contactless communication and RFID tags can work in any
environmentalconditions. This is the reason RFID systems are more efficient. Its quiet fun to work with
RFID based projects! In the previous article, we saw how to interface RFID with Arduino. Interfacing is the
first step to create any useful project. So why don’t we create an RFID based Access Control System or an
RFID based Door Lock using Arduino? The system I have designed here is a simple version of the project.
This project can be enhanced with a lot of features
The Basic necessity of security can be attained by designing various door locks such as mechanical locks or
electrical locks. These kind of door locks are designed with one or more keys, but for locking a large area
various locks are needed. Generally, traditional locks are heavy and that are not strong as they can damage
simply by using some tools. Electronic locks are better over mechanical locks, to resolve the security
problems that are connected with the mechanical locks. In recent days every device uses digital technology.
For example, identification of digital device using token, door lock system using digital technology, automatic
door opening and closing, automatic door lock systems, etc. These kind of systems is used for controlling the
movement of a door without using a key.

9) Automatic Traffic Light

21
In this post, you are going to learn about how to make an Arduino traffic light controller. This traffic
light controller will be used to control the flow of traffic. These can be applied at high traffic areas to
avoid traffic blocks or accidents.

The main part of this project is the Arduino which will control the LEDs and their timings to guide the
vehicles.

I also made an Density based traffic light controller using Arduino. Don’t forget to take a look at that.
For Custom Projects, hire me at https://www.freelancer.com/u/Muhammadaqibdutt
Working of Arduino Traffic Light Controller

This project is done to give you an idea of how the traffic light controller works. This is not the real time
traffic light controller.

So at start, green light of signal 1 and red lights at other signals will light up to give time to the vehicles
at signal 1 to pass.

After 5 seconds, the yellow light at signal 1 will light up to give an indication that the red light at signal
1 is about to come up and also to give an indication to the vehicles at signal 2 that the green light is
about to light up.

So after 2 seconds, red light at signal 1 will come up and green light at signal will come up meaning
vehicles at signal 1 must stop and vehicles at signal 2 can move.

Similarly the traffic light controller will work for the signal 3, signal 4 and the system will keep looping.

10) Smart health monitoring system

22
This project is significant in various ways because in today's world, everyday many lives are affected
because the patients are not timely and properly operated. Also for real time parameter values are not
efficiently measured in clinic as well as in hospitals.Sometimes it becomes difficult for hospitals to
frequently check patient’s conditions. Also continuous monitoring of ICU patients is very difficult. To
deal with these types of situations, our system is beneficial. Our system is designed to be used in
hospitals and homes also for measuring and monitoring various parameters like temperature, ECG, heart
rate, blood pressure. The results can be recorded using Arduino. Also the doctors can see those results on
android app. The system will also generate an alert notification which will be sent to doctor. Our system
is useful for monitoring health system of every person through easily attach the device and record it. In
which we can analysis patient’s condition through their past data, we will recommend medicines if any
emergency occurred through symbolic A.I.

First of all we have to make Communication between Arduino and android app using Bluetooth. for the
android code for this communication kindly follow the link below

now after establishing the communication successfully start creating android app using android studio
and use the code from above link after this send some data to arduino in our scenario we have 4 module
so we have 16 combination like patient want only temperature data or ecg, Blood pressure or temperature
and ecg etc. so for these 16 combination we use hexa table which stars from 0 and ends at 'F' so after
reading the incoming value arduino decide which type of data user wants. After that arduino start reading
that data from sensors and transfer that data to arduino using HC05 and android receive that data and
send to firebase which is real time database below is the structure of firebase database

Smart home Automation technology, lifetime is getting easier and simpler on all side in life. In the world,
automatically systems are being chosen over the manual system. With the fast growth in the number of users
of the internet through the past decade, the Internet has become a part and section of human life. In this study,
a remotely controlled smart home automation system, for monitoring and controlling the temperature degree,
humidity percentage, gas leakage, fires, and rain in the house, was developed. This system can also control the
light by using motion and light sensors inside and outside the home. The developed system consists of two
parts: hardware and software. The hardware consists of many units such as smartphones, personal computers,
Arduino Mega, Ethernet shield and relay board, temperature and humidity, gas, motion, flame, light and rain
sensors, a buzzer and fire alarm. Arduino Mega used as the Microcontroller is the primary hardware unit
connected with an Ethernet Shield responsible for sending and receiving directives and status via the internet.

web browser page connected to hardware devices and sensors through Ethernet shield. Moreover, it works to
