Background of the Study

The Philippines is an agricultural country with approximately 30 million hectares of land

area and averagely half of this land is dedicated to agriculture. Added to this is an increase in

agricultural waste, which leads to an increase in environmental contamination.

Animal wastes are a growing source of worry for both the general public and regulatory
agencies since they have the possibility of polluting both surface and groundwater. In the
Philippines, however, even with the Waste Segregation Act, it is evident that most of our
communities do not practice proper waste segregation, posing a risk not only to our
environment but, more seriously, to human health.

Philippine Statistics Authority documented that the income below poverty line of every
family in 2021 reaches PHP 12,030.00 per month. This figure demonstrates that millions of
Filipinos must be in distress allocating their money as the poverty incidence from Family Income
and Expenditure (FIES) for 2021 rose to 18.1% of the Philippine population.

One of the most critical problems for a sustainable community is its capacity to generate

affordable, economical, and environmentally friendly energy sources. Cow dung is just starting

to gain its popularity which is being pushed by green political agendas as a new source of

renewable energy. Like any other combustible material such as wood charcoal, cow dung has a

scientific potential in terms of flammability due to its high heating value. Aside from being the

cheapest it can also provide additional job opportunities extending its benefits in contributing to

the country’s economic progression.

This study was inspired and adapted from skill training brought to Kuajok by the Civil
Affairs Division of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan; the idea of reducing farm wastes
focusing on animal excretion and its effects relating to environmental factors, economic factors
and social-health factors.

Statement of the Problem

The main purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of cow dung briquettes
compared to wood charcoal which covers a significant impact in sustainable development by
reducing farm animal waste, health security, promoting low-cost of living, and potentially
opening job opportunities. To obtain all the essential knowledge, data, and information, the
researchers ought to answer the crucial questions as follow:

1. How long will it take to burn Cow Dung Briquettes and Wood Charcoal?
a. 5 seconds
b. 10 seconds
c. 15 seconds
d. 20 seconds
e. 25 seconds, and 5 seconds gap until it turned into ash.

2. How long will it take to boil:


a. 100 mL of water
b. 250 mL of water
c. 500 mL of water
d. 750 mL of water
e. 1000 mL of water

3. How high will be the temperature measurement between Cow Dung Briquettes and
Wood Charcoal?

4. What will be the observable advantages or disadvantages of using Cow Dung


Briquettes and Wood Charcoal?
Hypothesis of the Study

Cow dung briquettes are equally effective as wood charcoal in terms of their heat
energy output according to their burn duration, heat capacity and effectivity in boiling water.

Significance of the Study

The result of this study will benefit the following:

Students. The study will help provide opportunity to learn about sustainable
agricultural practices and the importance of waste reduction. Students may be inspired to
pursue careers in sustainable agriculture or environmental science as a result of this research.

Farmers. The study provides effective knowledge and techniques for reducing waste,
low-cost living, and increasing profitability. Sustainable practices can lower costs while also
improving a farmer's reputation, attracting more customers who are interested in sustainable
product.

Teachers. The study can also help instructors advance professionally by introducing
them to cutting-edge findings in sustainable agriculture and waste management. The
information may also help teachers develop innovative ways to teach students about these
topics and keep current in their area.

People. The study will provide several benefits, improved food quality and healthier
ecosystems. Farm waste reduction can help clean the air, water, and mitigate climate change
and produce cleaner food. Sustainable agriculture practices can lead to improved public health
outcomes.

Future researchers. The study provides a foundation for future research into
sustainable agriculture and reduction of waste. These findings can inspire future researchers to
investigate new techniques, technologies and policies that promote sustainability in agriculture.
Scope and Limitations

This study limits its coverage on the Comparative Study on the Effectiveness of Cow
Dung Briquettes and Wood Charcoal. The data collection will be conducted using two
experimental units (1) Wood Charcoal, (2) Cow Dung Briquettes under three tests. Test 1 will
illustrate the temperature measure of every 5 seconds gap until coal turns into ash. Test 2 will
show how long will the two treatments boil water depending on different volumes. And Test 3
will determine the maximum heat temperature of each experimental units.

The results of this study will be applicable only on the use of pure cow manure
effectiveness in terms of conducting the above tests. Afterwards, the researchers will come up
with the assessment procedures where data and information are critically analyzed and
evaluated.
