Project Title: Development of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Pipes Using Bamboo Pipes
as a Low-cost Alternative for Hydroponic Vegetable Production
Research Cluster: Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology

Co-Adviser

SDGs Addressed: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructures, and Climate Action

Project Duration:
Project Abstract: Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Pipes has been commonly used on hydroponic
vegetable farming for ages. This usually promotes demand for a
material that is considered to be a plastic which is a very harmful
substance for our environment. Not only PVC’s production is costly, it
also emits unwanted chemicals prior to its fabrication. Reducing plastic
use is a must for the current state of our environment. This problem
on PVC might not be on the limelight but it’s devastating effects will
surely occur as time passes by. The researchers propose Bamboo pipes
as an alternative for this commonly used material in hydroponics. With
this, both costs and harmful gas emission will be reduced in return for
an eco-friendly approach of pipe fabrication. The proper design
framework of the piping will be considered for the reason that the
structure of a Bamboo is coherently different from a PVC pipe.
Furthermore, the reinforcement of the Bamboo will also be considered
for its water resistance.

Pre-Requisite(s): Fluid Mechanics and Materials Engineering and Testing

Research Main question: What is the effectiveness of the treated bamboo pipe
Questions: as an alternative pipe? Specific question:
1. Does the product meet the sustainable development goal?
2. What is the efficiency of the treated bamboo pipe?
3. Why is treating the bamboo important?
Research This study aims to produce a Bamboo Pipe that will replace Polyvinyl
Objectives: Chloride (PVC) Pipes as a primary material for Hydroponic Vegetable
Production. The specific objectives are as follows:
1. To determine the necessary materials for treatment to prolong
the resistance of Bamboo Pipes.
2. To design a proper framework of the Bamboo Pipes in a
Hydroponic Vegetable Farm.
3. To find a cost-effective way of producing treated Bamboo
pipes.
Resources Needed: Bamboo, Water Tank, Hydroponic Farm, and Water Source
Are the existing facilities at the College sufficient to carry out this project work? (Yes)
Does the student need special training to use any College lab equipment? (No)

If yes, how will this be provided?
