1) Proposed Project Title:

Improving the quality of bamboo through different treatments.

2) My Core Question:

What is the best treatment to improve the quality of bamboo?

3) My Goals for this Project:

· To determine the types/kinds of bamboo that are growing in Province of Aklan

· To identify the types/kinds of treatment that are available in treating/preserving

bamboo.

· To determine the best type/kinds that is available in treating/preserving bamboo.

4) My Strategy to Accomplish this Project:

· Have an on-site visit to bamboo plantation

· Conduct an interview in the DENR about different bamboo species here in aklan

· Conduct different treatment in different samples of bamboo to recognize the different

effects.

· Compare the effects of the treatments by using different test: moisture resistance test,

durability test, and termite susceptibility test.

We plan to use the following materials:

· Finished Product which is wood flooring made from bamboo.

· PowerPoint Presentation with tables showing the different methods of bamboo

treatment and graphs showing the result of the different test conducted to the finished

product (e.g. durability test)

· Videos and images to show the stages of creating the product.

7) Overview & Panel Review

The researchers came up with three choices: the first and second choices were the use of

agricultural waste and waterlily fiber to be an additional component of making a packaging

material, the third choice is to exploit the use of bamboo in making a durable material. In the

end, the researchers have arrived with the idea of improving the quality of bamboo with the use

of different treatments. This capstone project aims to choose a specific treatment that will

enhance the quality and preserve the bamboo.

 Bamboo Treatment or Bamboo Preservation is to enhance its natural durability, it is

necessary to treat bamboo before use. It shrinks less when dry, starch and sugar contents are low

so there is a less chance of insect infestation. Many developing countries suffer lack of

awareness and professional treatment facilities. A lot of bamboos used for structural purposes

in rural housing are untreated and deteriorate in just a couple of years, hence that is the reason

why bamboo is still considered as a poor man's timber. Bamboo is one of the most important

nature’s substitutes for the endangered rainforest hardwoods. It is a quick-growing, versatile,

non-timber forest product whose rate of biomass generation is unsurpassed by any other plants. It

is utilized extensively for a wide range of purposes.

The product that the researchers will be making is a wood flooring made form treated

bamboo- treated to compare the effects of different processess to the longevity and strenght of

the bamboo. The researcher’s planned funding partners are the parents of the researchers who

supports them financially in their chosen study because they need to buy the components that

they needed in their experiments in order to make the result possible.

The service-learning component of this project is the researchers will be able to interact

effectively with individuals with wide experiences about their capstone project. Through this,

researchers will be able to learn new things and knowledge from them that are related to their

topics. The focus in this study is to find alternative materials in terms of building equipment with

out contributing bad effects to the environment, in the same time is frugal to the community

which can contribute to the success of the study and eventually help the community in return

especialli induviduals/business related in this field.

 The most important ideas that the researchers wish to convey during the presentation and

panel evaluation is to distinguish which is the most durable and effective treatment of bamboo

that is possible without sacrificing the cost. With this study, the researchers are finding an

innovative and alternative building material that is cost-efficient and have a better quality and

durable than the ordinary building material. The learning and experiences that they have gained

throughout the capstone project can able to help them in their career as future engineers.
