CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of Paper
Technology is the set of knowledge, skills, experience and techniques through
which humans change, transform and use our environment in order to create tools,
machines, products and services that meet our needs and desires. Etymologically the
word comes from the Greek tekne (technical, art, skill) and logos (knowledge)

The origin of the technology dates back to the Stone Age, when our ancestors
discovered the existence in nature of a series of stone (silex, quartz, obsidian ....)
extremely hard which could mold and sharpen it, this discovery with experience
developed to sharpen allowed them to make the first knives, axes and cutting tools
which facilitated the work of hunting in order to ensure a daily food ration.

In the previous example we have seen humans transformed his surroundings

selecting a stone and modifying it to create a tool by his skill and knowledge, allowing
hunt animals more quickly and effectively.

All objects around us in our daily lives are products of different technological
advances that have developed over the centuries of our existence, we have transformed
natural resources to make tools and machines that make our lives more easy, satisfy our
curiosity an desire to excel. Computers, tablets and smartphones, locomotives, cars and
airplanes, the bulb and the microchip, the first man on the Moon and conquer of the
space are milestones of our latest technology.

DISCUSSION

A. Why Use Word Processors

Because to make it easier for us to input data or group data, one of them is also in
microsoft excel.

The main reason why excel should be considered for learning for a beginner is
because almost all professions and all types of positions and fields of work use
microsoft excel. Teaching staff also need to learn microsoft excel.

Microsoft excel is usually used for various kinds of work such as organizing data,
calculating data, providing data and being able to analyze data. In addition, we can
present the results of data analysis in the form of graphs or diagrams with microsoft
excel.

In the education sector, especially schools, with microsoft excel teachers can
calculate grades, calculate students, calculate class data, make student report cards and
so on. In the field of accounting / offices, with microsoft excel we can calculate the
amount of profits and losses for a product, calculate employee wages or salaries, and so
on.
B. Word processor for teacher: Creating materials function of word processor
As a teacher, you may already use word processing program to prepare
worksheets and materials for your learners. You may also use one for correcting,
editing, and providing feedback on your learners digitally submitted written word.
1. Excel As A Grade Book
Calculating student grades is a basic activity in many Excel XP training
courses, even ones without teachers attending. A grade book is an easy way to
demonstrate averages, medians and other analytical formulas. However a teacher
can do more than just average a student's grade. Grades can be placed into
categories that are weighted differently, for example having homework affect the
final grade less than exams. Even individual grades can be weighted like this so a
short homework counts for less than a long one. A teacher can quickly spot trends
as a student's grade changes over the term, singling out struggling students for

6
extra help. Class averages help a teacher evaluate whether the coursework is too
easy or difficult.

2. Excel For Lessons

Techniques teachers learn in Excel XP training can be used to create
worksheets the students can use on the computer. These can be for individual or
group projects, giving them an easy form to enter and analyse data. For example,
a class project might track temperature and barometric pressure over several days
to see how it relates to weather patterns. A reading workbook could be created
with a separate sheet for each student allowing them to track their progress on the
reading assignments throughout the term. The data could be plotted on a bar
graph so that students can easily see their progress. A nutrition lesson can have a
sheet where students could enter what they eat each day. The sheet can pull
information on nutrition, calories, fat content and so on, from a database on
another page to let students see how different food choices affect the totals.

3. Excel As A Non-Mathematical Tool

Although Excel XP training focuses mostly on the mathematical aspects of
the spreadsheet application, many teachers have found creative ways to use the
software that have nothing to do with numbers. Rather than the same old
chemistry quiz, try creating an Excel crossword puzzle. The clues would all be
chemistry questions and the grid could automatically check student answers as
they enter them. Students have fun and learn at the same time.

The grid format is ideal for creating historical timelines that are easier to
visualize than lists of dates. These can be printed out for student reference or
turned into a game where students drag events into the timeline presented, sorting
them in order. Excel is a tool with a broad range of uses that go beyond simply
calculating averages. Teachers who take a creative approach to a spreadsheet
discover new ways to use Excel to enrich their lessons.

4. Excel As An Alternative for Filling Out Student Report Cards

For number processing, Ms. Excel has many formulas that support to
produce accurate data processing. Such as SUM to add up, AVERAGE to get the
average value, MIN, MAX to get the highest and lowest values, and many other
formulas. Therefore, currently Ms. Excel can be used by teachers or lecturers to

7
create a value database that is used for learning outcomes or for regular reports.
The method is quite practical and easy. We can use thExcel as An e VLOOKUP
formula. The VLOOKUP formula is used to process databases with vertical data.

C. Word Processing Activities For Learners

Word processing software is used to manipulate a text document, such as a
resume or a report. You typically enter text by typing, and the software provides tools
for copying, deleting and various types of formatting. Some of the functions of word
processing software include:
 Creating, editing, saving and printing documents.
 Copying, pasting, moving and deleting text within a document.
 Formatting text, such as font type, bolding, underlining or italicizing.
 Creating and editing tables.
 Inserting elements from other software, such as illustrations or photographs.
 Correcting spelling and grammar.
Microsoft Excel spreadsheets hold more than a million rows of data and automate
number crunching, but they can do so much more. Excel’s simple interface lends itself
to uses well beyond those that its designers ever imagined.
MS Excel is crucial for our today’s education system. It plays a significant role in
the classroom and education. Students can learn many essential things from Excel, such
as data visualization, faster calculations, organization and reconstruction, filtering,
planning, and many more. It is necessary for them in future. In their career, Excel will
help to manage the bulk amount of data and information effortlessly.
1. Learn to do Calculations Quickly and Accurately
Excel contains a variety of educational tools. If the students start learning
from Excel now, they can quickly handle the vast amount of data and
information. In future, they can also become eligible for high companies and
organizations. It also provides logical formulas and many mathematical
operations to carry out the calculations faster and better. Excel is ideal for solving
extensive numerical calculations, and therefore it saves time. There is no way for
human error. It is not wrong to say that this kind of application speeds up a
student’s brain development.

2. Increase Analytical Skills

8
Excel is proven to increase the creativity in a student’s mind. Economic is a
vital part of the business world. It would be best to have a finance and money
management lesson to grow up a business, and all these facilities are available in
Excel. Hence, we can say that Excel helps students enhance their analytical skills
by handling and growing the business and regular financial calculations. Vital
financial education indicates excellence in other subjects like maths, economics
and accountants. Once the students become advanced in these fields, they can
improve up financial results and money management.

3. Learn to Visualize Data and its Techniques

Data visualization is one of the essential skills for the students. It is suitable
for the students who want to pursue B. Com or M. Com in future. To present and
visualize the data, students need many appealing forms such as bars, pie charts,
graphs, histograms, etc., which are available in MS Excel. People like to see data
in a more accessible and understandable pictorial way. Therefore, the students
need to be advanced in recognizing the data and presenting it attractively.
Students should approach visualization using Excel for a better beginning.

4. Enhancement in Managing Time

For a smooth run in the business, you need to be updated and quicker in
handling tasks. There is nothing better than Excel, an all-rounder tool. Students
specifically learn to improve time management through shortcut tools in Excel. It
is a time-saving tool.

5. A Comprehensive Look at the Data

Sometimes, a large amount of information lands us in a problem that is
challenging to analyze. There are chances to get results in error. But Excel offers
you unique features such as conditional formatting where you can visualize total
data. You can look at accurate integrated data and get the best error-free outcome.
You can also simplify your data presentation and make it captivating by adding
pie charts, graphs, bars, and so on. MS Excel has been a great benefit for people
worldwide, and many students are getting advantages from Excel. Excel makes
you ready for the world. There is no hesitation that Microsoft Excel has become
an indispensable part of human’s life.

6. Importance of Microsoft Excel for students

9
Excel is a spreadsheet program designed to store and make sense of large
amounts of data. Excel offers users many capabilities, from sorting the data to
performing basic operations to performing higher-level operations. You’ll be able
to organize and manipulate a large amount of data without much effort, which can
otherwise be tedious, and difficult to do. Let’s look at the reasons why Excel is
such an important tool in the student toolkit:

7. Improved Time Management

Faster, more accurate calculations: With the formulas Excel supports, you
can perform faster calculations automatically — when you’re skilled in Excel,
you won’t need to manually perform large numerical calculations that are often
time-consuming and rife with human errors. With advanced excel concepts and
knowledge, you’ll be able to perform even the most complicated calculations and
operations with a few clicks, without wasting too much time or compromising
accuracy even a tad.

D. Using Word Processors

a. Excel Basics
If you're just starting out with Excel, there are a few basic commands that
we suggest you become familiar with. These are things like:

 ‌Creating a new spreadsheet from scratch.

 ‌Executing basic computations like adding, subtracting, multiplying, and
dividing.
 ‌Writing and formatting column text and titles.
 U
‌ sing Excel's auto-fill features.
 A
‌ dding or deleting single columns, rows, and spreadsheets. (Below, we'll
get into how to add things like multiple columns and rows.)
 K
‌ eeping column and row titles visible as you scroll past them in a
spreadsheet, so that you know what data you're filling as you move further
down the document.
 ‌Sorting your data in alphabetical order.
b. Excel Formulas

10
It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the wide range of Excel formulas that you
can use to make sense out of your data. If you’re just getting started using Excel,
you can rely on the following formulas to carry out some complex functions —
without adding to the complexity of your learning path.

a. Equal sign: Before creating any formula, you’ll need to write an equal sign
(=) in the cell where you want the result to appear.
b. Addition: To add the values of two or more cells, use the + sign
c. Subtraction: To subtract the values of two or more cells, use the - sign.
d. Multiplication: To multiply the values of two or more cells, use the * sign.
e. Division: To divide the values of two or more cells, use the / sign.
For more complex formulas, you’ll need to use parentheses around the
expressions to avoid accidentally using the PEMDAS order of operations. Keep
in mind that you can use plain numbers in your formulas.

c. Excel Functions
Excel functions automate some of the tasks you would use in a typical
formula. For instance, instead of using the + sign to add up a range of cells, you’d
use the SUM function. Let’s look at a few more functions that will help automate
calculations and tasks.
