CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of Paper
Technology nowadays has become an important part of life. Almost every
parts of our lives are relate with the use of technology. One of them is in our
education. Moreover, in the world of education teaching of a language.

In this era we understand that various foreign languages and English are
important things to learn. Teaching English has existed for many years and is
significantly growing due to the encouragement of the internet. With the rapid
development of science and technology, the emergence of multimedia technology
and the application of learning by displaying audio, visual, animation effects in
teaching English and establishing a platform that is very beneficial for learning
English teaching models in the new era. Evidence shows that multimedia
technology plays a positive role and has an effect on student initiative and
promoting better teaching in English classrooms.

One of them is an application commonly used by students made by

Microsoft, namely Word. Microsoft word is an application used to process various
documents. The function of Microsoft Word for education makes the learning
process less monotonous at schools and universities. The use of Microsoft Word in
education also makes documents more attractive and neat and minimizes errors in
writing. Besides that, it can also reduce excessive use of paper which can damage
the environment.

DISCUSSION

A. What is Word Processors

A word processor is a type of software application used for composing,
editing, formatting and printing documents. Word processors have a variety of
uses and applications within the business environment, at home and in educational
contexts. Word processors are used to create, edit and print documents, and well
as save them electronically. [techopedia, 2018]
Word processors have the following main functionalities:
1. Insert
2. Copy
3. Cut and paste
4. Delete
5. Find and replace
6. Print
7. Word wrap
Advanced word processors, referred to as full-featured word processors, support
additional features such as:
1. File management
2. Graphics
3. Font specification
4. Footnotes
5. Cross reference
6. Headers and footers
7. Macros
8. Layout
9. Spell check

3
10. Thesaurus.
Why Use Word Processors

For Teachers, Teachers can prepare, Create, and share materials. And for
learners : Learners can practice writing skills, grammar and othe
language pounts as well as to present their works

Word processors are a valuable part of the technology now available for
educators in schools. Students and teachers both receive many benefits when
doing classwork on the computer. Many of the headaches of paperwork are
eliminated. [Hamel, 2018] Word processors facilitate writing and editing,
especially with their ability to copy and move text (“cut-and-paste”), their built-in
dictionaries to check spelling, and their grammar checkers. Other common
features include a wide choice of typographic fonts and sizes, various paragraph
and page layouts, tools for finding and replacing strings of characters, and word
counts. Modern word processors also have many features once reserved for
desktop publishing systems, such as table creation and importation of graphic
images. They typically provide templates for common document types, such as
letters, memos, and résumés, and can generate multiple copies of a document with
recipient addresses drawn from a list (“mail merge”). [Britannica, 2022]

B. Word Processors for teachers and students: Creating Materials

Word processors can be used in many inventive ways, by both teachers and
students. Teachers can prepare, create, store and share materials for their classes
by using a word processing program, and learners can use a word processing
program both in and outside the classroom, to practise writing skills, grammar and
other language points, as well as to present their work.

Word Processor for Teachers : Creating Materials

1. Inserting Image and Links

Two of the things you will probably want to do when creating materials are
to incorporate images into your worksheets to brighten them up, and to
include links to websites which your students can go to for further research
or practice.

4
2. Creating forms

A form is a word document which has interactive elements in it,

resembling closely the kinds of simple exercises you might find on the
internet. Forms can be very useful for making collections of basic
exercises, and are a solid introduction to the more complex area of making
web-based interactive materials. The advantage of creating activities using
forms is that it is simple. The disadvantage is that you cannot build in
feedback to your students.

3. Using TrackChanges
Word comes with certain ‘tracking’ or ‘versioning’ tools built in. These
tools allow documents to be shared among a group of users, with each
user’s changes and edits highlighted in a different colour and identified
their initials (or by the user name used to install the word processor
originally). When a document has been edited using these tools, any
changes made by the second writer (format changes, word order, deletions,
inserted comments, and so on) will be highlighted for the original author to
see. The original author can then choose to accept or reject each suggested
change.

4. Using Markin
This is another Windows program that aids the correction of word
processed work from learners. It comes with a series of tools for marking
up grammar mistakes, spelling errors, word order and other common
errors, using a series of abbreviations which will be familiar to most
teachers and different colours for different types of errors. Once the teacher
has finished correcting a text, it can be returned as a word processed
document, or uploaded to a web server as a webpage. It can even be mailed
from within the program itself. In many ways, then, Markin can replace the
TrackChanges tool.

Word Processor for Learners : Creating Materials

1. Using Word Processors For Creative Writing

5
Word processors lend themselves well to creative writing both in and
outside the classroom. The basic advantage of using word processors in
writing activities is the ability to model texts, share texts, produce them
collaboratively and engage in peer and teacher editing on more interactive
level. Word processing activities will put the emphasis on the process of
writing rather than on the final written product, for example,
brainstorming, note-taking and revising, all of which makes for a more
creative use of language.

2. Using Word Processors for Language Practice

Word processors are not only capable of enhancing writing skills, but can
also be excellent tools for introducing or practising language. The ability to
move words and chunks of text around the page easily can guide learners
towards a deeper understanding of how the language works. The ability to
undo and redo moves and edits means that experimentation is easier and
less time-consuming. When used in conjunction with grammar exercises,
word processors can activate ‘noticing’ skills, increasing awareness of
language structures and encouraging learners to play with language. Many
of the activities we do with pen and paper can work equally well on a word
processor – filling in the blanks, sentence reordering, adding titles to
paragraphs, and so on. They also work well on another level, covering
basic text manipulation skills. In this way, the use of word processors in
our teaching not only serves as an aid to language practice or for the
improvement of writing skills, but also teaches our learners valuable ICT
skills which will carry through into other areas of their lives.

3. Using Word Processors for Presenting Work

One final use of word processors to consider is that of encouraging learners
to put their word processed documents into a presentation package,
possibly as part of an ePortfolio of their work.

4. Using Word Processors: Considerations

6
There are some potential downsides to using word processors – not the
least of which is working with mixed technological ability classes where
typing skills ( or lack of them ) may play a large part in performance
anxiety and in the pace at which activities are carried out. Some attention
must be paid to not putting too much pressure on your learners to perform
too quickly.

Further Activities
1. Dictation
A simple word processing activity to start with is a dictation from the
teacher – in this case the opening few lines of a creative writing narrative.
This should be treated as a standard dictation, and the learners should input
(type) the text as they listen. Once you have dictated the first few lines, try
introducing a small round of peer correction, with learners exchanging
texts and making edits to their partner’s text, possibly using TrackChanges,
before moving on to a final round of teacher-led correction.
2. Noticing activity
An activity which encourages noticing of structures at lower levels, and for
younger learners, is for pairs of learners to produce a short descriptive text.
3. Collaborative writing activity
A well – known writing activity is that of the collaborative story, where a
story is started by one learner or pair, and then passed to subsequent pairs
of learners, who add to the story.

C. Word Processing Activities For Learners

It is important to incorporate word processing skills in the classroom. A
balanced technology program combines a range of computer skills such as word
processing, spreadsheet, presentation, Internet, database, graphics, and desktop
publishing. Of all these, word processing is probably the most extensive and
essential for students to master.

Word processing is the composition, editing, and formatting of text. Word

processing programs, such as Microsoft Word, in addition to working with text

7
also provide tools to insert pictures, edit photos, draw objects, and produce
graphic organizers. The range of options available within word processing
programs make them versatile to the user.

It is very likely that your students will be required to use word processing
software to complete school assignments. In addition, many of them will need
word processing skills later in life when they enter the workplace. For these
reasons, it is important to include word processing skills when planning classroom
activities.
The great news is that using Microsoft Word can be fun! There are so many
products your students can create using word processing software.

 story  magazine
 journal  web page
 poem  calendar
 poster  questionnaire
 title page  resume
 report  letter
 news article  newspaper
 script  mailing labels
 essay  catalog
 outline

When selecting a product you want students to create using a word processing
program, it is essential to determine the technology skills that are required. In
addition, consider the students’ grade level and previous computer experience
prior to selecting a task. Word processing skills can be grouped into basic and
advanced levels of difficulty. [TechnoHella, 2011]

D. Using Word Processors

Word processing is one of the most common applications for computers
today. It would be difficult to spend a day in a modern office or university without
coming into contact with a word processing program. Most people have had some
contact with word processing. We shall examine the concept in some detail, so
you will be familiar with a number of levels of word processing software
applications, the types of tools such programs make available to you, and so you
will know what kinds of problems are best solved with this type of program.

How Word Processors Work

The advantages of word processing programs can best be illustrated by
thinking of some of the disadvantages of typewriters. When we use a typewriter to
create a document, there is a direct connection between the keys and the paper. As
soon as you press a key on the keyboard, there is an impact on the paper, and the
document has been modified. If you catch a mistake quickly, you can fix it with
correction tape or white-out. If your mistake is more than one character long, it is
much harder to fix. If you want to add a word, move a paragraph, or change the
margins, you have to completely retype the page. Sometimes this necessitates
changes on other pages as well. A one word change could lead to retyping an
entire document.

Word processing is a type of software that focuses on the ability to handle text.
The computer does this by assigning each letter of the alphabet and each other
character on the keyboard a specific numeric code. These numeric codes are
translated into computer machine language, and stored in the computer's memory.

9
Because the information is in memory, it is very easy to change and manipulate.
This is the key to the success of word. [Team, 2017]

Uses of Word Processing

Some of the functions of word processing software include:
 Creating, editing, saving and printing documents.
 Copying, pasting, moving and deleting text within a document.
 Formatting text, such as font type, bolding, underlining or italicizing.
 Creating and editing tables.
 Inserting elements from other software, such as illustrations or
photographs.
 Correcting spelling and grammar.

Aplication of Word Processor

A word processor can be used for creating documents like :
 Memo
