Tutorial 1

Problem 1
List some possible applications of rectifiers. Which of these could benefit from the
ability to adjust the dc output level with a controlled rectifier?

Problem 2
In the polarity reversal circuit find the output voltage if the left switch is on 75% of
time T and the right switch is on 25% of T?

Problem 3
Analyse the step-up converter if the switch #1 is on for 95% of T and the switch #2 is
on for 5% of T. Find vout/vin.

Problem 4
A dc-dc converter has a current source connected between the input terminals.
Assume some sort of electrical load at the output. Of the four switches, what
combinations can be operated without violating the KCL restriction?

Problem 5
A switch matrix converts ac to dc. The input is a four-phase ac voltage source, while
the output is a dc current source.
(a) Draw a converter and label the switches
(b) State the KVL restrictions in terms of switching functions
(c) State the KCL restrictions in terms of switching functions
(d) Both KVL and KCL must be met. State this combined requirement in
terms of the switching functions.

Problem 6
Find Vout as a function of vin for the circuit. The resistors are all identical. vin can have
any time-varying value.

Problem 7

In the power processor the energy efficiency is  = 95%. The output to the 3-phase
load is 200 V line-to-line (RMS) sinusoidal voltages at 52 Hz and line current of 10 A
at a power factor = 0.8 lagging. The input to the power processor is a single-phase
utility voltage 230 V/60 Hz. Input power is drawn at unity power factor. Calculate the
input current and the input power.
