Task 3 (page 17): Look at the results of an opinion poll below and write a survey report
using the information given.
Purpose
The aim of this report is to present the findings of a survey carried out to determine
ratepayers’ opinions of Lambshorne Town Council’s performance. The data included in this
report was obtained from 1000 citizens’ comments on various aspects.
Services
Of the 1000 ratepayers surveyed, fifty-nine per cent reported that they were dissatisfied with
the services provided by the Council. Over a half of the responses said that both refuse
collection and recycling facilities services are poor. The main reason for this is that there is
too much litter in streets, said forty-nine per cent of the respondents. On the other hand, a
large proportion of the public were of the opinion that the maintenance of public buildings
service is good, which is shown by the fact that fifty-one per cent of survey participants had
positive comments on the beautiful restoration of old Corn Exchange building.
Amenities
It is generally felt that the Council is doing well at providing public facilities, as shown by the
fact that the majority of 1000 people rated the amenities section from fair to good. This is
further emphasized by the fact that sixty-eight per cent of those interviewed pointed out the
excellent condition of the new sport center. There were thirty-eight per cent of the citizens
that felt dissatisfied with the toilets, bus shelters, street lighting service, only one per cent
more than those that were satisfied, mainly because of the requirement of more street lights in
Maplegrove housing estate.
Council efficiency
On the whole, majority of the ratepayers of Lambshorne Town agreed that the cost efficiency
of services and the helpfulness, response to complaints sections are fair, as proved by the fact
that they took the largest proportion of each section, fifty-one per cent and forty per cent
respectively. Thirty-six per cent of people believed that lower rates are preferable to more
services. Staff efficiency was the service that received the most unsatisfactory comments at
the rate of sixty-five per cent of the total responses. The sixty-four per cent of people were of
the opinion that the Council has too many employees for work done.
Recommendation
On the basis of the findings above, it would seem that the Council’s services appear to need
improvement. The biggest flaws of the services are the lack of facilities for recycling and
waste collection. Public parks and leisure facilities are adequate, as indicated by the
assessments of amenities. Thus, I suggest there should be more street lights installed. Based
on the opinion regarding the staff efficiency, I would recommend that this section needs to be
altered in a more productive way.
