Introduction
The Savvy® Energy Infosystem functions as a system network manager
and intelligent local controller in Novar’s Advanced Building Control
System.

Savvy provides the processing power and communications speed to

maximize control of energy demand. Designed for single-building
control, Savvy can be configured to meet the size of a facility, the
complexity of control requirements, and any special monitoring and data
collection needs.

This document provides instructions for mounting and wiring the Savvy
base plate, mounting the electronic assembly, connecting it to the
telephone network, and checking the installation.

CAUTION!
If the Savvy base plate has been provided as a replacement for
an Executive Controller (EC) transition board, the instructions
in this document for wiring a Digital Outdoor Light Sensor
(OLS) to the Savvy must be followed carefully (see “Digital
Outdoor Light Sensor” in the “Wiring” section of this
document). Failure to connect the light sensor to the Savvy
base plate as indicated in these instructions can result in
damage to the OLS input on the EC.

CAUTION!
Observe national and local electrical codes.

CAUTION!
This device contains a lithium battery that must be disposed of
properly. Replacing it with the wrong type of battery can cause
an explosion. Only qualified personnel should service this
equipment.

 Reduce the risk of electrical shock or fire. Do not interconnect the

outputs of different Class 2 circuits.
 Do not rely on the Savvy as a final safety device.
 Make sure the HOA switches included on the Savvy base plate are
in the proper position before turning on the power.
 Make sure that the 24-VAC power wiring is connected to a
dedicated transformer. No other devices (including the outputs)
should be powered by the transformer connected to the Savvy.
 Do not ground the transformer for this module on the secondary
side.
 Make sure that the Savvy power cannot be switched off
accidentally. The Savvy requires continuous power for proper
operation.

Mounting
To mount the Savvy base plate, the following items are needed:

 Savvy base plate

 Hex wrench (included with the base plate)
 Four screws (not provided)

NOTE!
The base plate assembly should be mounted in an accessible
location with the top of the assembly not more than six feet
from the floor. The mounting surface should be flat and
smooth to prevent the base plate from being bent. When the
base plate is mounted to paneling or drywall, hollow-wall
anchors should be used to insure that the assembly remains
secure.

screws at the bottom of the base plate and lift off the cover.
2 Position the base plate assembly against the mounting surface.
3 Mark the mounting surface to show the locations of the four slotted
mounting holes.
4 Drill holes in the places marked in Step 3.
5 Install the hollow-wall or other appropriate fasteners.
6 Turn screws into the fasteners until approximately ¼ inch remains
between the wall and the head of the screws.
7 Position the base plate over the screws and slide it down until the
screws slide into the mounting slots.

Wiring
Refer to Figure 3, as appropriate, when wiring the Savvy input/output
connections.

NOTE!
All digital inputs should be dry contact closures.

Supplying Power
The Savvy is powered by a 24-VAC, Class 2, transformer (not included;
transformer kit must be purchased separately). The transformer must be
installed not more than 10 feet from the Savvy using minimum 18-gauge
wire. It can be mounted directly to the Savvy base plate via the
knockouts on the sides of the assembly.

Use the following procedure and refer to Figure 3, as necessary, to install

the transformer.
Step Table

Step Procedure

1 Connect the leads from the transformer secondary to the screw

terminals labeled 24 VAC, Class 2, 40 VA, located on the Savvy
terminal board.
2 Connect the transformer primary leads (white/black) to a 120-VAC
source.
3 Connect the ground terminal (Terminal #74) to a suitable earth
ground.
4 Apply power to check voltage at the 24-VAC terminals.
 Voltage should be approximately 25 to 28 VAC.
5 Turn off the power until needed.

NOTE!
The Savvy requires continuous power for proper operation.
Make sure the Savvy power cannot be switched off
accidentally.

NOTE!
The Savvy requires a dedicated transformer for the electronics.
A separate transformer must be provided for its control
outputs.

Analog Outdoor
Light Sensor
The Novar Controls analog (4–20 mA) outdoor light sensor should be
connected to the Savvy according to the following instructions.

NOTE!
The Savvy transition board is available in two versions. One
displays the Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., (UL) label at the
top; the other does not. The terminals used for the Analog

NOTE!
The maximum number of modules that can be connected to the
Savvy Module Network terminals depends upon the Savvy’s
configuration. The two digits following Savvy in the model
number indicate the maximum number of external modules.
For example, Savvy-31 will support 31 IOM or unitary
controller modules. The Novar Controls Network Expander
module cannot be used with the Savvy to increase the network
capacity.

Control
Inputs/Outputs
Step Table

Step Procedure

1 Connect the appropriate input/output wiring to the Savvy transition

board’s eight analog or digital Class 2 outputs and eight analog or
digital Class 2 inputs.

Remote Override
Switches
If desired, one or more remote override switches and/or indicators can be
connected to the Savvy’s Remote Override Inputs terminal strip. These
switches must be momentary and dry contact only.

Make the necessary remote override switch assemblies and wire them to
the appropriate connections on the Savvy transition board using two-
conductor wiring.

NOTE!
All grounds can be commoned remotely and a single ground
wire returned to the Savvy. The terminations for a remote
override of a specific Savvy output are located directly below
that output location. As many remote override switches as
necessary can be paralleled across one input.

cathode of the LED to GND (Figure 4). Additional LEDs can be
connected in parallel if each LED has a 22-ohm, ¼-watt resistor in series
with it.

Step Procedure

1 Loosen the two screws at the bottom of the Savvy Interface Panel
with the hex wrench included with the electronic assembly and lift
off the cover.
2 Slide the Savvy electronics assembly down from the top of the
interface panel assembly and over the mounting posts.

6 Check all wiring connections to make sure they are correct and secure
and replace the Savvy Interface Panel cover.

Connecting to
Telephone Network
If the Savvy installation requires connection to the telephone network, a
telephone interface jack must be located at the installation site.

NOTE!
The telephone interface jack is normally supplied by the
telephone company and should be type RJ-11C. The location
of the jack should not be more than 6 feet from the Savvy.

Route the appropriate telephone cable from the telephone interface jack
through the knock-out on the side of the base plate assembly and insert it
into the phone line connection located at the top left of the Savvy’s
transition circuit board.

NOTE!
Make sure the bushing is snapped securely to the
interface panel to prevent the sharp edges of the panel
from nicking or cutting the cable.

3 Connect the cable to the RS-232 or Ethernet port, as appropriate.

Checking Installation
Hardware
Once the base plate has been mounted and the wiring connections have
been made, the following items should be checked to ensure proper
operation.

 Check to make sure the base plate is attached securely to the

mounting surface.
 Check all wiring connections to make sure they are correct (based
on the transition board used) and secure.

If the base plate is secure and the wiring connections are correct, reattach
the Savvy base plate cover.

Software
NOTE!
The system programming must be downloaded to the Savvy
panel before the installation can be checked.

A portable computer running iScope® or ESS32 software should be used

to check the installation at the Savvy location. The portable computer
connects to the Savvy via the RS-232 port connection at the bottom right
side of the Savvy electronics assembly. The Savvy is connected to the
portable computer via the RS-232 adapter cable (Part No. 600540000).

Refer to the iScope or ESS32 instructions for system monitoring and

checkout.
