5) What did I discover I knew and understood about contemporary policy and
legal context applicable to schooling in South Africa?

1. As an educational leader, it is essential to have a comprehensive understanding of the


policy and legal contexts that govern the South African education system. In this
assignment, I will reflect on my understanding of contemporary policy and legal contexts
applicable to schooling in South Africa based on my advanced diploma in school
leadership and management.
2. Understanding of Contemporary Policy: One of the most significant policy changes in
South Africa's education system was the introduction of the Curriculum and Assessment
Policy Statement also known as CAPS was designed to provide a more coherent and
integrated curriculum, aligning with the needs of learners and the country. I discovered
that this policy sets the standards for the knowledge and skills that learners should
acquire at each grade level, as well as the assessment standards to measure their progress.
3. (DAS) Developmental Appraisal System can provide valuable information to both
educators and administrators to support continuous professional growth and improve
student learning outcomes. Here are some of the key things that can be learned from a
developmental appraisal system in a South African schooling context: Alignment with
curriculum: A developmental appraisal system can help educators and administrators
align their teaching practices and leadership styles with the national curriculum and
educational goals of the country Student achievement: The appraisal system can help
educators identify areas where students may be struggling and determine what steps can
be taken to improve student achievement.
4. Understanding of Legal Context: The South African Schools Act formally named
(SASA) is the primary legislation that governs the operation and management of schools
in South Africa. I discovered that this act provides a framework for the establishment,
funding, and governance of public schools, as well as the rights and responsibilities of
learners, parents, and educators. The SASA sets out the regulations and procedures to be
followed in the management of schools and the appointment of staff.
5. I also learned about the National Education Policy Act (NEPA)which provides for the
development of national education policies and guidelines, including those related to
curriculum, assessment, and teacher training. This policy highlights the importance of
continuous professional development for teachers, which is essential to ensure that they
remain up to date with the latest teaching methods and curriculum developments.
6. Finally: the contemporary policy and legal contexts applicable to schooling in South
Africa are complex and evolving. The education system's policy and legal frameworks
are designed to provide equal opportunities for all learners to achieve their potential. As
an educational leader, it is essential to understand these policies and laws to effectively
manage schools and support the development and achievement of learners. Through my

1. As a school leader and manager, it is essential to continually reflect on one's practice and incorporate new

management, I have gained a deeper understanding of various leadership and management practices that are relevant
to the South African context. In this essay, I will discuss what I have learned and how I plan to incorporate this

management is the importance of strategic planning in creating a shared vision and direction for the school. In the

 In which areas do I require further knowledge and development to ensure that I am

1. As a first-year student studying school leadership and management in South Africa, it is


important to acquire further knowledge and development to provide effective leadership and
management regarding legal matters. As I believe that school leaders must have a deep
understanding of the legal framework that governs the education system in South Africa to
manage legal matters effectively and ensure compliance with relevant policies and regulations.
In this paper, I will discuss various ways where I require further knowledge and development
regarding legal matters.

1) Deeper understanding of Education and Training

a) The can be achieved by attending training and educational programs that focus on the
legal framework and its implications on school leadership and management as this is an
effective way to acquire further knowledge and development. These programs provide an
opportunity to learn about new legislation and amendments to existing legislation, as well
as to network with other professionals in the field. By receiving extra lessons on these, I

an excellent opportunity for me to gain valuable knowledge and skills related to legal
