I. Components in the Appreciation and Production of Visual and

Applied Arts

1. Relates the components of arts and design production to different

arts and design forms. (AD_ADP11-IIe-j-2)

II. CONCEPT NOTES

Components of an artwork
1. Subject - the depicted object(s)
2. Form - visual organization
3. Content - impact or meaning
Works of art have subject, form and content. We often identify a work by
its subject: a landscape painting, a sculpture of a young woman, a
lithograph of a cat. Form (or design), is the visual organization of the artwork
- how the artist has used line, shape, value, color, etc. Content is the impact
or meaning of this work.
A horse's head is the subject of both works (below). However, the artists
have used form very differently. Picasso's painting (left) has gestural lines,
high value contrast, and exaggerated proportions to create a highly
emotional content. Conversely, the harmonious rhythms and more
naturalistic proportions in the ancient Greek sculpture create a very
different feeling. The differences in content were created by the differences
in form, not the subject matter. The decisions you make regarding form
(type of line and shape; selection of value and color; size of the work; type
of balance, etc.) shape the work's impact and meaning.
Arts and Design Forms

Visual Arts
These are the arts that meet the eye and evoke an emotion through an
expression of skill and imagination. They include the most ancient forms,
such as painting and drawing, and the arts that were born thanks to the
development of technology, like sculpture, printmaking, photography, and
installation art, the latter a combination of multiple creative expressions.
Though beauty is in the eye of the beholder, different eras in art history
have had their own principles to define beauty, from the richly ornamented
taste of the Baroque to the simple, utilitarian style of the Prairie School.

Types of Visual Arts

The visual arts include mediums such as drawing, painting, sculpture,
architecture, photography, film, and printmaking. Many of these pieces of
art are created to stimulate us through a visual experience. When we look
at them, they often provoke a feeling of some sort.

Media Arts
Media Arts is art that is created through use of new media and
technology.
The term media art is used to indicate a certain group of art works. In
general, the term media art is understood to apply to all forms of time-
related art works which are created by recording sound or visual images.
A time-related artwork is a work that changes and 'moves', in contrast to
older art forms that are static, which stand still, such as paintings,
photographs and most sculptures. Time-related art works include works in
the fields of sound, video and computer art, both installations and internet
projects, and single channel works. Single channel works are video works
that are shown by projection, or on a monitor screen.

Example of Media Arts

- animation, web design, interactive mobile applications and the like

Applied Art
The term "applied art" refers to the application (and resulting product) of
artistic design to utilitarian objects in everyday use. Whereas works of fine
art have no function other than providing aesthetic or intellectual stimulation
to the viewer, works of applied art are usually functional objects which have
been "prettified" or creatively designed with both aesthetics and function in
mind. Applied art embraces a huge range of products and items, from a
teapot or chair, to the walls and roof of a railway station or concert hall, a
fountain pen or computer mouse.

Applied Art Include:

For the sake of simplicity, works of applied art comprise two different
types: standard machine-made products which have had a particular
design applied to them, to make them more attractive and easy-to-use; and
individual, aesthetically pleasing but mostly functional, craft products made
by artisans or skilled workers. Artistic disciplines that are classified as
applied arts, include industrial design, fashion design, interior design, and
graphic art and design (including computer graphics), as well as most types
of decorative art (eg. furniture, carpets, tapestry, embroidery, batik,
jewellery, precious metalwork, pottery, goldsmithing, basketry, mosaic art,
and glassware). Illuminated manuscripts and later book illustration are also
classified as applied arts. Architecture, too is best viewed as an applied art.
