Launch of National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security

releases additional EU funds
Kabul, 12 July 2015

The European Union welcomes the launch, on 30 June 2015, of the National Action Plan (NAP)
to implement the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.

The implementation of the National Action Plan was one of the key commitments of the Afghan
government during the Afghanistan - EU Human Rights Dialogue held on 15 June 2015 in Kabul.

The EU is a strong supporter of the Afghan government's efforts to improve women's rights in
Afghanistan. The EU is providing EUR 2.3 million through a Call for Proposals to assist Afghan
civil society with the promotion of peacebuilding and the support of women’s active participation
in local and national peace processes as well as their representation in decision-making levels.

The Call for Proposals will focus on enhancing civil society-Government dialogue, strengthening
the relationship between relevant actors, local officials, and traditional actors including dispute
resolution bodies. It will encourage a culture of peace at the local level and support the
establishment of a protection mechanism. The EU's financial support acknowledges for example
the role of mothers and ordinary women as key players for local conflict transformation through
mediation and dialogue as well as grievances resolution at the community level.

"I congratulate the Afghan government for the launch of the National Action Plan. Enhancing
women's participation in public and political life is a key element for peace building in
Afghanistan. We expect that by the implementation of the NAP Afghan women would have a
better level of participation in decision-making" said the EU Special Representative in
Afghanistan, Ambassador Franz Michael Mellbin.
