Quarter: 0 Week: 1 MELC(s): Prepare hand tools

MELC Code: TLE_IACSS912UHT-IIIb-18
Title of Textbook/LM to Study: __________________________
Topic: Using and Maintaining Hand Tools
Objective: Use the appropriate hand tools and ensure to follow the requirements
for its proper maintenance.

Let Us Discover

In repairing and maintaining hardware equipment, it is necessary to have a toolkit that contains
all the necessary tools in different types of jobs. Now, you will learn which tools to use in
preparing a task.

Proper Tools and Selection

Table 1.Tools and its uses
Proper Uses of Tools Picture
1. Long Nose Pliers is used for holding, bending and stretching the lead of an
electronics component or connecting wire. When holding wires, grip the long
nose pliers carefully and firmly. Do not use it as a hammer.

2. Wire Cutter is used for cutting copper, brass, iron, aluminum and steel wires.

3. Flat Head Screwdriver is used to drive or fasten negative slotted screws.

Don’t use a flat head screwdriver to get rid of a Phillips head screw. Never use
a screwdriver as a pry bar or crowbar.

4. Philips Head Screwdriver is used to drive or fasten positive slotted screws.

Use a Phillips head screwdriver with crosshead screws. Don’t use this kind of
screwdriver to puncture anything. This can damage the head of the screwdriver.

5. Soldering iron is a hand tool used to join two or more metal conductors with
the support of soldering lead melted around it.

6. Soldering Stand is a hand tool composed of a heavy-duty metal base and a

reinforced spring holder. Always use a stand to avoid burns or damage after soldering.

7. Soldering Lead is a metal or alloy that is used to join together metal work pieces.

8. Soldering Flux is a chemical agent used to supply a clean soldered.

9. Crimping Tool is a tool used to conjoin two pieces of metals by deforming one or
both that causes it to hold together. Always verify the types of wire or cable of a crimper
if it is capable of crimping. And make sure that the stripper has a comfortable grip,
cleanly removes insulation from wires, and keeps the actual wire intact.

10. Wire Stripper is a small hand-held device used to strip the electrical insulation from
electric wires.

11. Tweezers is a tool used to reach small parts or objects.

12. Anti-static wrist strap is used to safely ground a person working on very sensitive
electronic equipment, to prevent the buildup of electricity on their body, which might
lead to electrostatic discharge (ESD) Equipment. Check properly the overall use,
possible wear, and cleanliness of the wrist strap. Always ground yourself while working
with electronic components.
13. Multi-tester is a tool used to test the integrity of circuits and therefore the quality of
electricity in computer components. Always maintain the functionality and accuracy of
multi tester and LAN tester to ensure the accurateness of measurement of any things
that you measure.
14. LAN Tester is a tool designed to check most network cable wiring.

Proper Maintenance of Tools

To prevent tools from damage, we must properly maintain the tools to keep them safe and in
usable condition. Here are the subsequent requirements for tools and equipment
maintenance:

1. Obtaining a duplicate of the upkeep schedule recommended by the manufacturer.

2. Ensuring that maintenance is performed as needed.

2 GSC-CID-LRMS-ESSLM, v.r. 03.00, Effective June 14, 2021

3. Ensuring that the person(s) performing the upkeep is competent.
4. Retaining records of maintenance/service conducted
5. Specifying who is to blame for overseeing equipment maintenance and where the
records are kept.
6. Putting in a system for removal and tagging of damaged or defective tools and
equipment.

To ensure that tools and equipment remain in condition and last for a protracted time, store
them properly so it’ll be easy to search out when needed, and are less likely to be lost.
