Definition of Terms

Novel coronavirus - is a virus that was first identified in 2019. It can cause severe respiratory illness,
especially in young children, but there have been few cases of human-to-human transmission. New
strain of coronavirus that has not been previously identified in humans. The novel coronavirus has
caused severe pneumonia in several cases in China and has been exported to a range of countries and
cities.

COVID-19 pandemic - pandemics are caused by viruses that are transmitted from animals to humans.
The current COVID-19 pandemic is a respiratory illness that has affected people all over the world: it's
spread by coughing or sneezing and can cause pneumonia, bronchitis, and other respiratory illnesses.

UNESCO - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Works to create the
conditions for dialogue among civilizations, cultures and peoples, based upon respect for commonly
shared values. It is through this dialogue that the world can achieve global visions of sustainable
development encompassing observance of human rights, mutual respect and the alleviation of poverty,
all of which are at the heart of UNESCO’s mission and activities.

Department of Education (DepEd) - is the executive department of the Philippine government


responsible for ensuring access to, promoting equity in, and improving the quality of basic education.

Modular Learning System - features individualized instruction that allows learners to use self-learning
modules (SLMs) in print or digital format/electronic copy, whichever is applicable to the learner.
Learners under Modular Distance Learning can also use other resources such as Learner’s Materials,
textbooks, activity sheets, study guides, and other study materials.

Online Learning System - The type of instruction that is mediated via the internet. Instruction may be
synchronous or asynchronous and various technologies can be use to mediate the process.

Abrupt switch - is a change in direction of a project. It can be caused by a variety of factors, but most
commonly it's a result of having to make a decision about the future of the project.

Stigmatized - they are unfairly regarded by many people as being bad or having something to be
ashamed of.

EDUCAUSE - is dedicated to understanding the role of technology in higher education and to expanding
the knowledge base for institutional decision-making and planning.

Commission on Higher Education (CHED) - is the Philippines' premier institution in charge of improving
student access to quality tertiary education.

Learning Continuity Plan (LCP) - is intended to balance the needs of all stakeholders, including
educators, parents, students, and community members, while both streamlining engagement and
condensing several preexisting plans.

Learning management system (LMS) - is a software application or web-based technology used to plan,
implement and assess a specific learning process.
Autonomy - is the ability to make your own decisions about what to do rather than being influenced by
someone else or told what to do.

Isolation - separating people with symptoms or confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Camaraderie - a feeling of friendliness toward people that you work or share an experience with

Hands-off Learning Approach - is another term for experiential learning, where individuals immerse
themselves in a subject to learn.

Infuriation - Something that is infuriating annoys you very much.

Disastrous - A disastrous event has extremely bad consequences and effects or attended by or causing
suffering or disaster.

Instantaneous - done, occurring, or acting without any perceptible duration of time.

Squinting - having eyes half closed in order to see better.
