MATH 2565A: Introduction to Applied Statistics

Prerequisites: High school MATH 11U or MATH 11U/C.

Course credit exclusions: SC/MATH 2930, SC/BIOL 2060, AP/ECON 2500, AP/SC/GEOG
2420, HH/KINE 2050, SC/MATH 2560, SC/MATH 2570, HH/PSYC 2020, SB/OMIS 1000.
Note: Students who have passed SC/MATH 1131 3.00 may not take SC/MATH 2565 3.00.

Platforms: Moodle(eclass), Zoom, Crowdmark.

Textbook: Introduction to the Practice of Statistics, by D.S. Moore, G.P. McCabe, and B.A.Craig,
10th edition (W.H. Freeman and Company).

In-class lectures will not always follow the content in the textbook identically or in the same order
as presented in the textbook.

Software: R, Rstudio (free download from the internet) will be incorporated in this course.

Note:
1. NO extra test/work/project other than above listed grade components for this course.

2.A simple scientific calculator without statistical functions can be used for tests and the final exam.
Graphical or programmable calculators are NOT allowed.

Course policies and acknowledgements:

1. I will not answer questions in person before and after class. If you have questions, please
attend the Zoom office hours, or send me email.

2. Students should attend every class, and obtain their own note. Lecture note will not be
distributed per individual’s request.

3. For a 3-credit course, the expected workload is 3 hours of material learning each week with
an additional 6 hours of work per week in studying and completing assessments. However, if
you find you are often working less than 5 hours a week in this course, then you are probably
not devoting enough time to the course.

4. To ensure academic integrity of the course, there are no make-ups in this course. Students
who miss quiz/test/midterm are to email (using their York email address) their instructor
within 48 hours of the day of the quiz/tests/midterm with a detailed/clear explanation as to
why the test was missed. Supporting documentation may be requested. Once approved, the
corresponding weight will be transferred to the Final exam.

5. Weight of any quiz/test/midterm can NOT be transferred if the quiz/test/midterm has been
taken. No exceptions.

6. It is students’ responsibility to be aware of all in-class announcements and moodle(eclass)

announcements information. Ignorance is not an excuse.

7. Assignments that are handed in using Crowdmark will have specific format requirements. It
is your responsibility to carefully read the requirements and adhere to them.

8. Assignments are usually given more than one week to finish, is not a time-limited work, hence
rare extension.

9. All course related zoom meetings, such as lecture meeting, discussion sessions, if any, may
be recorded and posted online.

11. Students are expected to familiarize themselves with York University Senate Policies on Aca-
demic Honesty. All students are expected to abide by this policy. Disciplinary action that
mayresult in a course mark of F or grade of 0% on an assessments, etc., will be initiated
againstany student suspected of violating academic honesty policies. In particular, students
mustbe aware that consulting outside sources such as Chegg, Symbolab, Bartleby, etc. is an

academic dishonesty will be tolerated.

Students shall note the following:

1. Zoom is hosted on servers in the U.S. This includes recordings done through Zoom.
2. If you have privacy concerns about your data, provide only your first name or a nickname when
you join a session.
3. The system is configured in a way that all participants are automatically notified when a session
is being recorded. In other words, a session cannot be recorded without you knowing about it.
