What are Protists?

Organisms that have plant-like,

animal-like, and fungus-like
characteristics.
They cannot be classified as a plant,
an animal nor a fungi.
What are the 3
groups of Protist?

1. Protozoans
2. Algae
3. Molds
What are
PROTOZOANS?
• Animal-like protist
• They move using their
animal-like appendages:
cilia, flagella and
pseudopodia
• They are HETEROTROPHS
What are ALGAE?

• Plant-like protists
• Their bodies are called THALLUS
(not true stem, leaves, or roots)
• They have chlorophyl in their cells
• They are AUTOTROPHS
What are MOLDS?

• Fungus-like protists
• No chlorophyl and No
appendages.
• They are SAPROTROPHS
Why are slime molds
grouped as protist
and not as FUNGI?
How can we can we
say that an organism
is a FUNGUS?
FUNGI
KINGDOM
What are Fungi?
• They are SAPROTROPHS
• They are decomposers
• They’re bodies are
described as mycelium.
• They reproduce asexually
by spore formation and
budding.
How do fungi differ from
plants?
How do fungi differ from
plants?
• Their cell walls are made of
chitin.
• They do not have chlorophyl
• They do not undergo
photosynthesis
• They do not have roots,
leaves, stems, flowers, fruits
Groups of Fungi
1. Symbiotic Fungi – some plants
depend on for their needed soil
nutrients.
2. Beneficial Fungi – provides numerous
drugs.
3. Edible Fungi – can be consumed by
humans.
4. Pathogenic Fungi – causing diseases
5. Parasitic Fungi – causes harm to its
host.
