1. Compare and contrast the two movies in terms of their perspectives towards climate
change.

The films are similar in the sense that they are both categorized as eco- disaster
films, centered on the expiration of Planet Earth. However, significantly different
approaches are taken in conveying the storyline and message of each film.
2012 is based on the historical calendar prediction by the Mayans that on the
21st of December 2012, the Earth would come to an end at the expense of widespread
cataclysmic events. On the other hand, The Day After Tomorrow portrays an ice age
event as a result of severe global warming. Thus, after comparing the premise of both
films, it’s clear that they are based on and influenced by two separate historical contexts
– an ancient religious prediction and the other a scientific book. A massive ice shelf in
the Antarctic begins to break off in The Day After Tomorrow while a solar flare
phenomenon occurs in space in 2012.

2. Based on the two movies, which of the two you find more scientific, or at least
presented claims that are more scientific? Justify your answer.

The Day After Tomorrow successfully shaped its applaudable structure and
reception compared to 2012. One of the key contributing factors was the historical
context. It was based on scientific non-fiction, meaning the climatic and ice age events
that were carried into the film, could very well happen in our future. This immediately
makes it more gripping and believable to audiences, allowing it to reach out to
particular markets interested in these environmental concepts, gaining more
recognition.

3. What are the values that you have learned upon watching these two movies?
It made me reflect on my surroundings and how every actions of mankind affect
the environment. Nowadays, we get so caught up with the fast paced development of
technology that we neglect its great impact in our nature and on earth itself. We tend
to focus more on our selfish motives and fail to consider our very own home. The
movies warn us how fast global warming emerges just as how fast the technology rises.
It advocates on the precautionary measures we have to take account of while we can
still make a change. It also amplifies the great love we have for our family. No matter
how tough our life roads can get, our family will always be our greatest resort.
