Section E
Case study based questions are compulsory.

36. GERMINATION OF SEEDS : Germination is the process of seeds developing into new plants. Various environmental
conditions trigger the seed to grow and is usually determined by how deep the seed is planted, water availability,
and temperature. In the first step to germination, the water is drawn from the soil and absorbed by the seed, a
process called imbibitions. The water activates special proteins, called enzymes, which begin the process of seed
growth. First the seed grows a root to access water underground. Next, the shoots, or growth above ground,
begin to appear. The seed sends a shoot towards the surface, where it will grow leaves to harvest energy from
the sun. The leaves continue to grow towards the light source in a process called photo morphogenesis. All fully
developed seeds contain an embryo and, in most plant species some store of food reserves, wrapped in a seed coat.
Some plants produce varying numbers of seeds that lack embryos; these are empty seeds which never germinate.
Dormant seeds are viable seeds that do not germinate because they require specific internal or environmental
stimuli to resume growth.

To study the germination characteristics of an hybrid seed a seed germination laboratory randomly selected 100
seeds from each of the 5 bags of seeds, these seeds were standardized under favourable conditions of germination
for 25 days and the data was maintained for the number of seeds which had germinated as follows:

Bag 1 2 3 4 5
No. of seeds germinated 80 96 84 78 82
Based upon above data answer the following questions:

37. Rugby World Cup 2015 : Rugby union, widely known simply as rugby, is a full contact team sport that originated
in England in the first half of the 19th century. One of the two codes of rugby football, it is based on running with
the ball in hand. In its most common form, a game is played between two teams of 15 players using an oval-shaped
ball on a rectangular field called a pitch. The frequency polygon graph given below depicts the heights of rugby
players who played in Rugby World Cup 2015.

(i) Difference between the height having the maximum number of players and the height having the minimum
number of players?
(ii) What is the class interval corresponding to height 185 cm? Also find the class size?
(iii) Calculate the total number of the players from the data given in the graph.
 O
