1.

A baseball player hits the ball to an upward direction with a velocity of 5

ft/sec. The equation that gives the height(h) of the ball at any time(t) is
h ( t )=2 t −5 t−3 . Find the maximum height reached by the ball?

2. Find the length and width of a rectangular lot whose length is 4 meter
larger than its width and whose area is 60 m2.

Solution:
Let w = width and l=length

The length l is 4 meters larger than the width, so:

l = w+4
The area is the product of the length and the width,
A = lw
60 = (w+4)w
2
60=w + 4 w
2
w + 4 w−60=0
( w +10 ) ( w−6 )=0
w +10=0 w−6=0
w=−10 w=6

Use, w=6, then

l=6 +4=10

The dimensions of the lot is 10 meters and 6 meters for the length and
width respectively.
3. A picture has a height that is 3 times its width. It is to be enlarged to
have an area of 507 square inches. What will be the dimensions of the
enlargement?

Solution:
Let w = width and h=height

The height h is given as being 3 times of the width, so:

h = 3w
The area is the product of the height and the width,
A = hw
507 = 3w(w)
2
507=3 w

2 507
w =
3

w 2=169
w=± 13

The width is 13 inches, and the height is

h=3 ( 13 )=39 inches

The size of the enlargement will be 13 inches by 39 inches.

A garden measuring 8 meters by 12 meters is to have a pathway of same

width installed all around it, increasing the total area to 192 square meters.
What will be the width of the pathway?
