TITLE: MIDSUMMER NIGHT

FADE IN:
INT. TRAIN STATION – NIGHT

It’s past rush hour. Aemie (23) rides a train absentmindedly. The
few people in the train are giving her weird looks and parting to
give way to her as she walked wearing a converse and bridal gown.

Aemie
Left you out there standing,
Crestfallen on the landing

She stops singing repeatedly as a handkerchief was held by a

gentleman in front of her.

Aemie
NO, thank you.

Ezekiel
I insist.

She recognizes the voice and looks up. Recognition and resentment
were evident on her face as she saw the man in front of her.
Ezekiel
You’re still as beautiful as that day.

The metal floor clangs as she dropped her phone in shock.

Aemie
Where… where have you been? I’ve searched for you
for so long, I…

Ezekiel
I just visited the city but I kept seeing your
name in the newspapers.

Aemie
Really? You saw my work?

Ezekiel
Yes, and you did wonderful. Anyway, you looked
like you needed someone to talk to. Do you mind?

He motions the empty seat beside her. She shakes her head and he
sits down beside her.

Ezekiel
So, what happened?

Aemie
Today is my wedding day, if not obvious. I left
my groom at the altar. My job requires me to
socialize with people regardless of gender.
Modeling was my dream job ever since. He often
took it personal and would get jealous. At first,
it was cute but later on he started hurting me.
Accident at first, but later on, it became
uncontrollable and unpredictable, especially when
he’s drunk. It came to the point wherein I was
pregnant and he beat me up so bad, I lost my
child. After that, he blamed me for my child’s
death.

He clenches his fist as he heard her story. She held his hand as
to calm him down. He was in anger and utter disbelief.

Ezekiel
Then it’s good that you left him. In fact, you
should have left him earlier. You deserve better.

Aemie
Yes, I deserved that blue-eyed five foot 11
inches tall guy who understands me and all my
dilemma. That guy who would choose me over
anything, support me, assure me, and knew me like
the back of his hand. I still love him although I
never knew if he felt the same way for me back
then. I haven’t changed since he left.

He shifted in his seat and stared at her apologetically.

Ezekiel
Aemie…

Aemie
You were the one I thought of when I was at the
altar with him. I knew you wouldn’t treat me the
way he did. You’d whisper jokes nonchalantly, be
gentle to me, loving, caring, and everything else
he wasn’t. I wouldn’t have lost my first child.

You’d be protective but you wouldn’t ever do

horrific things to me because you witnessed how
my father did that to my own mother and how I
suffered for it every single day. You were there.
You saw me cry and beg my mom to divorce him but
she never did, no matter how many bruises or
wounds she had, she still loved him.

Ezekiel
And you swore to yourself never to let the same
fate befall you, to end the trauma and abuse.

Aemie
That is why I never confessed to you. Because I
was waiting for you to confess first. I was so
consumed by my anger that I… You were my right
love at the wrong time.

Ezekiel
I’m sorry. I was overcome by fear to tell you
about how I felt. I loved you back then.
Let’s save this conversation for later. For now,
why don’t you clean yourself up? Would you like
to go home? I’d be willing to accompany you til
you’re safe at home.

Aemie
I can’t. He’d be waiting for me at home. He would
kill me.

Ezekiel
Then come with me. My stop is near.

SCENE 2
INT. HOUSE

Aemie
You’re telling me you actually kept OUR house?

Ezekiel
Actually, I bought this last year and had it
renovated. We had so much memories in here. You
were my best friend and only friend back then.

He motions the far most room.

Ezekiel
That would be my room and this would be yours.

He points to the nearest one. A child suddenly cries in the

background.

Aemie
It’s either of the two: there’s a ghost, or you
had a child.
Ezekiel
That would be the latter.

Aemie
Oh my god! You were married?! I have to leave or
your wife would divorce you, wait, I should meet
her!

Ezekiel
Well, she’s not here. But I’d visit her tomb
tomorrow.

Aemie
She-, oh god, I’m sorry for your loss. How did
she pass on?

Ezekiel
She—her brother raped her. At the third semester
of her pregnancy, he beat her up so bad, she went
into labor. Then her body wasn’t able to take it
anymore. You know the rest.

Aemie
An animal that he is. May he rot in hell. I’m
sorry for your wife. May I see your baby? Is it a
he or a she?

He nods and motions her to wait. He leaves and

brings back a baby with him.

Aemie
It’s a she! So, what’s this little bundle of
joy’s name?

Ezekiel
It’s Katana.

Aemie
Where did you get that name from? It’s so cool.
She plays with the child. The baby’s face instantly brightened
and her laughter filled the air.

Ezekiel
It’s her mother’s name. Katana Satoru.

Aemie
It’s my supposed sister in law’s name. What’s the
name of her brother? Don’t tell me it’s Minato.

Ezekiel
Was that your abuser’s name?

Aemie
Is Katana’s father Minato?

Ezekiel
Yes, but he should never know.

Aemie
He doesn’t deserve to know after all the crap he
did. He’d never earn my sympathy. He killed his
own sister and my child. Katana’s supposed
sister. If you don’t mind, would you allow me to
visit her again? I promise, I would protect
Katana with all that I am. I’d treat her as if
she was my unborn child.

Ezekiel
Yes, you could.
