PROBLEM
SOLVINGPREPARED BY: ALLEN IVER D. BARROGA
Work Problem
Mother can water the plants in 45 minutes.
Father can water the plants in 30 minutes. How
long would it take them to water the plants if
they worked together?

Solution:
Read:
Given: It takes mother 45 minutes to water the
plants while father takes 30 minutes to do the
same task
Required: How long it would take them to water
the plants if they worked together
Represent:
Let x be the number of hours it would take
them to water the plants if they worked
together.
Solution:
The first step to creating an effective project plan is to set a
baseline. The baseline is the foundation on which the other
Relate:
project elements will be built on. This must include a scope
statement. Start by identifying what business need the
project aims to address and how the company will benefit
Rate Time
from the project. Work
NOTE: To find rate
1/n
Mother 1/45 x x/45 where n= time of
work when done
independently
Father 1/30 x x/30

Equate: Solve: LCD: 45=5×3×3

30=5×3 ×2
5×3×3×2=90

Conclusion:
Therefore, it would take them 18 minutes to
water the plants if they worked together
Distance Problem
Student A goes to school at 6:45 a.m. Student B
goes to school at 7:00 a.m. If Student A travels at
a speed of 40kph, and Student B travels at a
speed of 60kph. How long does it take Student
B to overtake Student A's vehicle.

Solution:
Read:
Therefore,
Given: Time Speed Student A
went 15
Student A 6:45 a.m. 40kph minutes
earlier than
Student B 7:00 a.m. 60kph Student B

Required: How long it will take for Student B's

vehicle to overtake Student A's vehicle
Solution:
Represent:
Let x= number of hours for Student B's vehicle to
overtake Student A's vehicle
Let x+15/60=x+1/4= Student A's time
Relate:

Rate Time Distance

Student A 40 x+1/4 40(x+1/4)

Student B 60 x 60x

Equate:
For Student B's vehicle to overtake Student A's
vehicle their distances must be equal
Thus,
Solution:
Solve:

Conclusion:
Therefore, it takes Student B's vehicle 1/2 hours
or 30 minutes to overtake Student A's vehicle
