Lectures: (Sep 4 – Dec 3) Monday and Wednesday, 17:30 – 19:00, DMS 1160.
Office Hours: Wednesday 16:00 – 17:00, STM 668. I am also available after our class time to answer
your questions.
Textbook: Applied Calculus, By Shana Calaway, Dale Hoffman, David Lippman. This is an open
source book. You can download the pdf here:
http://www.opentextbookstore.com/appcalc/appcalc.pdf
Syllabus: Review of elementary functions; Limits; Differential and integral calculus in one variable with
applications; Functions of several variables; Partial derivatives.
Rough course content: Section 1.1 - 4.3 of the textbook.
The discussion group is a weekly 80-minute session led by a teacher’s assistant. During this session,
the T.A. will solve exercises related to the material covered in the classes from the previous week. Take
advantage of these sessions to increase your understanding of the subject. During the session, I will
provide you with a list of suggested exercises; the T.A. will also be able to answer questions about
these problems if you are having difficulties solving them.
Evaluation: There will be two midterm tests and one final exam. Your grade for the course shall be
calculated as follows: midterms 50% (25% each) + final 50%. Any student who scores less than 40%
on the final exam cannot pass the course.
If you miss a midterm for a valid (i.e. properly documented as per UOttawa’s rules) medical reason, the
weight of the missed midterm will be transferred to your final exam. You must inform the instructor
immediately.
Midterm Tests: There are two 80-minute midterm tests, written during the lecture period.
Test 1: Wednesday, Oct 9, 17:30—18:50.
Test 2: Wednesday, Nov 13, 17:30—18:50.
The type of questions and the coverage of each test will be posted about one week before the test.
Final Examination: The 3-hour final exam will be scheduled during the exam period. It will cover all of
the material of this course.
Calculators: Students will NOT be allowed to use calculators on the tests or final exam.

Classroom conventions: Please turn off all electronic devices: laptops, cell phones, mp3 players,
pagers, etc. In addition, we ask that you do not use laptop computers in class. These types of behaviors
are detrimental to the class atmosphere, and as such will not be tolerated. I will not tolerate excessive
noise. Please respect these basic guidelines.
