PLANTS BODY PARTS
ROOTS
ROOTS
The roots hold the plants to
the ground.
They absorb water and
minerals from the soil and
bring these up to the stem
and leaves.
THREE MAIN PARTS OF ROOTS
Primary root.
This is the first root to develop from the seed. The
primary root is the largest root form in a plant. It
usually grows straight down into the soil.
THREE MAIN PARTS OF ROOTS
Secondary root
These are small roots that branches out from the
primary root.
THREE MAIN PARTS OF ROOTS
The root hairs
It grow from the secondary root. They are very fine
root. They look like short pieces of strings attached to
the secondary roots.
ADVENTITIOUS ROOT
This root grows in unusual
places above the ground. This
roots provide additional
support for some trees and
plants with tall, thin, and soft
stems.
TYPES OF ROOT SYSTEM
Taproot system
Plants have a large and well-developed primary
root that grows deep into the soil these are the
taproot system.
In some plants like carrots and radish, the
taproot becomes thick and fleshy due to some
stored materials.
TYPES OF ROOT SYSTEM
Fibrous root system
These are the plants that the primary route
stops from growing but many secondary roots
that are almost equal in size grow from it.
This will develop secondary root system called
fibrous root system.
PROP ROOTS
It has roots that grow
from the lower part of
the stem above the
ground like sugarcane.
AERIAL ROOTS
These are plants that
have roots that cling
to the branches of
tree like orchids.
Aerial roots get water
from the air.
STEMS
STEM
The stem is the part of the plant
where leaves, flowers, and fruits
are attached. In most plants, the
main forms many branches.
These branches are also part the
stem.
Stems may be green or brown in
color.
STEM
The stem connects the roots
to the other parts of the It
grows upward toward the
sunlight.
It supports the whole plant.
It must be tough to stand the
force of strong winds
TWO KINDS OF STEMS
1. Woody stems
These are non-green stems that are thick
and hard.
They are covered with Bark is the rough,
outer covering of a woody stem,
Trees, shrubs, and some vines are woody
stems

2. Herbaceous stems
These are soft and green stems.
Plants with herbaceous stems do not grow as tall as
plants with woody stems.
Plants with herbaceous stems are herbs.
Examples of these herbs are cabbage, lettuce, pechay,
and ferns.
Herbaceous stems are not as strong as woody stems.

LEAVES
LEAVES
The leaves of plants are usually green in color.
This is because leaves have chlorophyll, the green
coloring pigment that captures light energy from
the sun. This light is used as energy in
photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process in which plants
absorb light from the sun and convert it into
chemical energy stored as food
LEAVES
Photosynthesis
KINDS OF LEAVES
Simple leaf
It has only one
leaf blade
attached to a
petiole.
Guava leaves
KINDS OF LEAVES
Compound leaf
Consist of
many leaf
blades
attached to
one petiole.
Malunggay leaves
Flowers
Flowers
Not all plans bear flowers.
Plants that bare flowers
are called flowering
1
plants.
Many flowers are brightly
colored and fragrant to
3 attract insects which
help in the process of
pollination.
Characteristics of flowers

Flowers differ very much in

their size texture color and
fragrance.
Flowers have different
1

colors. There are

flowers that are red
orange yellow pink 3

violet and white.

Characteristics of flowers
Flowers have different sent or
smells.
Some flowers may be fragrant
like sampaguita and camia. 1
Some flowers have no smells
like the bird of paradise.
Other flowers have a bad smell.
A flower smell or fragrance 3

come from its petals.

Characteristics of flowers

Flowers differ in the

texture of their
petals.
Some petals are soft
and smooth to touch,
well others are hard
at rough.
Parts of a Flower
Parts of a Flower

Flowers are made up

of the following
parts: petals, sepals,
pistil, stamen,
receptacle, and
flower stalk.
Parts of a Flower
Petals are the colorful parts of the
flower.
Sepals are smaller than petals and
are green in color.
Receptacle held together the petals
and sepals.
Pistil is the female reproductive
organ and the stamen is the male
reproductive organ of a flower.
They can be found in the middle of
the petals.
Fruits
Fruits

A fruit is the matured or ripened over

the a flower. The fruit is the part that
contains the seeds. The seeds contain
stored food and dormant plant
embryo. The plant in embrayo looks
like a very small plant that is
contained inside a seed. The stored
food nourishes the plant embryo.
Fruits

Fruits are either

fleshy or dry. They
also vary in size,
shape, and color.
