 They are short plants with long narrow leaves, growing wild or
cultivated on lawns and pasture, and as a fodder crop.

 Trees Some trees are very tall.


Kinds of Plants
 There are many plants in the surroundings.
 Most of them are green but there are also plants with other colors.
1. Trees
 Trees are big plants. They have hard stems and many leaves. Some
trees give fruits.
 They are called fruit trees.
 Other are used as timbers.
 They are made into furniture and houses.
2.Herbs
 Small plants, with soft stems are usually called herbs.
 That is why they do not grow tall.
 They do not usually live for a long time.
 We get many of our vegetables from herbs.
 Some common herbs are coriander, mint, spinach, tulsi and marigold.
 We use some herbs like coriander, mint,
spinach, etc. for cooking.
 The leaves of the tulsi give us medicines.
 Many flowers like the marigold grow on
herbs.

3. Shrubs
 There are also plants that are small but their stems are hard.
 These are called Shrubs.
 Shrubs are smaller than trees.
4. Vines
 Some plants have very soft stems.
 Because of this, they are not able to stand up.
 Instead, they crawl on walls, fences, and trees.
 These plants are called vines.
 Vines have very of stems. But they use these
soft stems to climb.
Flowering Plants
 Flowers are called the bloom or blossom of a plant.
 The flower grows on a stalk – a thin node – which supports it.
 Flowers have petals. Inside the part of the flower that has petals are
the parts which produce pollen and seeds.
 Flowers are the reproductive structure of flowering plants.
Parts of the Plant
 Plants have different parts. These parts do something for the plants.
1. Roots
 Plants need water to grow.
 The part of the plants where water enters is the root.
 Roots are not always seen. This is because they are
under the ground.
 This is the reason why trees do not move from one
place to another.
What do root do?
 Plant’s roots take in water from the soil.
 Roots also help plants stay in the ground.
 Some plants have long roots.
 These roots are near the ground.
 These roots are long and deep.

2. Stem
 Most of the plants stand because of the parts that support it. These
parts are the stems.
 The main stem of big plants is called trunk.
 The stem where leaves grow is called branch. Tall trees have many
branches.
 These branches are connected to the trunk.
 Water and nutrients travel from the roots to
the stem and to the upper parts of the plants.

3. Leaves
 The leaf is the part of the plant that is easily seen.
 Most leaves are green. This color makes the food of the plant.
 But leaves may also have other colors.
 Leaves have different shapes.
 Some are pointed.
 Some are heart shaped.
 Others are round and oblong.
Fruits and Flowers
 Many plants have fruits.
 The fruit is the part of the plant that contains seeds.
 The seeds can grow into a new plant.
 Fruits come from flowers.
 Most plants have flowers.
 Flowers make the environment beautiful.
 This is because many of them are colorful.
