The Transfer of Terminal from San Jose to Irawan

I. Introduction

The city government of Puerto Princesa is set to start several improvements for the
city, we are expecting to see more changes in the economy especially in barangay Irawan
particularly the operation of new Puerto Princesa city land transportation terminal. The
Puerto Princesa Transportation Terminal will be transferred from San Jose to Irawan. Engr.
Jovenee Sahagun, the head of the City Planning and Development Office states that the
public can expect more development in Barangay Irawan, she clarified that the area is
strategic for development and effectively reduces congestion. The city intends to construct a
transport terminal in Irawan to decongest Barangay San Jose. Barangay San Jose will become
very congested in five year’s time, therefore, the need to transfer the transport terminal is a
necessity. City government of Puerto Princesa through Honorable Mayor Lucilo R. Bayron
are requesting to implement the transfer of terminal from San Jose to Irawan for the benefits
and comfort of the citizens. The operation of transfer will be implemented on January 6,
2023.According to City Assistant Engr. Aries Grande this structure has the necessary
facilities that can cater the riding public. The project will be composed of ticketing office,
waiting areas, male and female toilets with 52 water closets, 12 lavatory and 18 urinals.
Based on the document containing the details of the project, the total budget is ₱91,027,931
for the operation. The transferal of terminal from barangay San Jose to barangay Irawan
should be implemented because it can help in boosting the economic development, it
improves tourism and it can reduce the traffic congestion in the city of Puerto Princesa.

II. Body
The transfer of Transportation Terminal has a negative impact and is fatal for
commuters because it results in significantly higher fares and double-cost trips in commuting
tricycles. Ex-official board member Ferdinand Zaballa stated that the operation of the new
terminal will place an additional burden on passengers given the possibility of an increase in
transportation fares as a result of the ongoing rise in oil prices, so the decision to move the
terminal to barangay Irawan was off. As a result, the effects of the City’s decision are felt by
the residents of the Poblacion and the North part of the city. However, the transferal of the
terminal from San Jose to Irawan will be beneficial and will greatly improve the tourism in
our city. Due to its convenient location it will decrease traffic which was the main problem in
Barangay San Jose. More tourist will come to our city and in turn will increase our tourism
businesses. Shops will also be constructed to satisfy the commuters needs, shops such as
restaurants, souvenir shops, and other business opportunities for the private sector. According
to Sahagun, “In the long run all the facilities and services will generate a ripple of success,
and even our transport system will turn out good, it will really be a complex whole. Specially
if you are from the municipalities and you will see that you can find everything that you need
here.
The increased in tourism can mainly affect the economy because it can help in
improving tax revenue and personal income, increased standard living and more employment
opportunities will brought for the people of Puerto Princesa City. Mayor Bayron recently
stated in his State of the City Address that the city plans to build a transport hub in Irawan to
relieve the congestion in Barangay San Jose and other urban barangays. He referred to Brgy.
Irawan is strategically important because a concrete national road that runs through Barangay
Irawan will link the north and south national roads. He said that moving the transport station
is essential because Barangay San Jose will be extremely congested in five years. The
provincial board members are trying to figure out how to assist commuters from nearby
communities who would have more financial difficulties as a result of being transferred to
Barangay Irawan in the location of the transportation hub. In her Tuesday privilege speech,
board member Cherry Pie Acosta argued that the provincial government had to provide free
transportation for Palaweños from the new terminal to Robinsons Place Palawan once it is
open. She asked that the General Services Office (GSO) assess the condition of the buses
owned by the province government and, if required, set aside money for the purchase of
replacement buses.

III. Conclusion
The city of Puerto Princesa's new transportation terminal will lead to several
improvements and changes to the economy of the city. The location will be transferred from
San Jose to Irawan. Engr. Jovanee Sahagun aims the implementation of a transportation
terminal that will reduce the congestion of transportation and it is a strategic way for the
development of the city’s economy. The transfer of the terminal will be beneficial and
improve tourism in our city, as well as help the city to have economic growth due to the new
establishments, all of the facilities and services will be successful, and even transportation
will be successful.
