PHOTOSHOP AND ITS TOOLS

The toolbox provides easy and quick access to Photoshop’s menu item, a dialog box and the color palette

SELECTION TOOLS - Allow you to select a portion of an area or a subject of an image to work on.

Marquee tool:
the most basic of selection tools and often the one most useful
used to draw selections based on geometric shapes
Specifically, it allows you to draw rectangular and elliptical selections
To form the selection, simply click and drag the mouse.

Move tool:
move selections, layers and guides
Usually you use it to move a layer around after it has been placed
Hold the [Shift] key to limit the movements to vertical/horizontal

Lasso Tool - makes freehand selection


Polygonal Lasso Tool – makes freehand, straight-edged selections
Magnetic Lasso Tool – makes freehand, straight-edged segments selections

- The Selection border snaps to the edge of the image being selected

Magic Wand Tool:


selects similarly colored areas
One of the oldest selection tools in Photoshop
Selects pixels based on tone and color

Crop Tool  - trims images to the selection


Slice Tool – creates user slices in an image
Slice Select Tools – selects slices from an image

ENHANCEMENT TOOLS - Allows you to modify the image with different tools and achieve the desired effect on your image

Healing Brush Tool – blends imperfections into surrounding images


Patch Tool  - repairs imperfections using a sample or pattern

Brush Tool:
paints brush strokes on an image
Makes both hard-edged and soft-edged strokes depending on the selected brush

Pencil Tool – draws hard-edged freehand strokes on an image


Clone Stamp Tool – creates a copy of an image
- can copy a portion of an image and reapply it repeatedly to cover an unwanted portion of an image
Pattern Stamp Tool – points a part of an image with a pattern
History Brush Tool – lets you paint a copy of one state or snapshot of an image into the current image window
Art History Brush – lets you paint with stylized strokes, using an image in a state or snapshot
Eraser Tool – erases pixels and restores parts of a saved image
Background Eraser Tool – replaces pixels with transparency
Magic Eraser Tool – replaces similarly colored areas with transparency
Gradient Tool – fills the layer with a gradient
Paint Bucket Tool – fills selected areas or adjacent pixels that are similar in color value to the pixels you click
Blur Tool – blurs hard edges in an image
Sharpen Tool – sharpens soft edges in an image
Smudge Tool – spreads color across an area of an image
Dodge Tool – lightens areas in an image
Burn Tool – darkens areas in an image
Sponge Tool – changes the color saturation of an area
DRAWING TOOLS - Used to create and modify shape, work paths and rasterized shapes
- Unlike the brush and pencil tools, you can edit the outline or paths created by these tools

Path Selection Tool – selects a shape or segment


Direct Path Selection Tool – selects a shape or segment and allows you to edit its anchor points
Horizontal Type Tool – allows you to enter a horizontal text in your image
Vertical Type Tool – allows you to enter a vertical text in your image
Horizontal/Vertical Type Mask Tool – creates a selection based on what you typed
Pen Tool – creates precise, smooth lines using anchor points
Freeform Pen Tool – draws lines and curves with anchor points
Add Anchor Point Tool – adds anchor point to existing pen selection
Delete Anchor Point Tool – deletes anchor point from existing pen selection
Curvature Pen Tool – let you draw complex shapes and paths without the need to edit control handles or remember keyboard

Shape Tools – creates different shapes depending on the tool chosen

NAVIGATION TOOLS
Hand Tool – moves the image within the window
Zoom Tool – magnifies and reduces the view of an image

Foreground and Background Color

Eyedropper Tool – samples a color from an area of an image


Color Sampler Tool – allows you to view color values in defined spots of your image
Measure Tool – measures distances, locations and angles in an image

OTHER TOOLS

Notes Tool – adds written comments to a selection


Audio Annotation Tool – adds verbal comments to a selection
