Teaching Summary

Purpose of Assignment

The purpose of the assignment is to provide the student the opportunity to summarize in
detail the development, implementation, and evaluation of an instructional intervention for a
specific patient or professional group.

Approach to this Assignment

For my personal approach to this assignment, I wanted to review a clinical issue that was
specific to Mother Baby. After several brainstorming attempts, I decided to address
barriers to hand hygiene compliancy prior to the care of newborns. This assignment built
upon weekly assignments to complete the semester long educational project.

Reason for Inclusion

This assignment provided me the opportunity to research, analyze, and review a

workplace issue. Additionally, by completing the aforementioned items, I was able to
educate my fellow staff members. Moreover, this assignment displays my ability to
communicate and modify educational methods to best fit my teaching audience. While,
the educational audience for this assignment was coworkers, the methods utilized to teach
them are applicable when teaching infant’s parents how to scrub in when entering the
nursery.

Critical Thinking

 Revises actions and goals based on evidence rather than conjecture.

I created an anonymous survey that was distributed to the educational

participants to address perceived barriers to completing the 3-minute
chlorohexidine scrub in. Clinical research supports that proper hand hygiene is
associated with better outcomes for infants. The initial goal of the educational
project was to identify entities that decrease compliancy. By acknowledging what
interferes with adherence, I was able to present ideas that may positively impact
completion.
  Engages in creative problem solving.

As noted in the paper, a nursing cohort was using the room I intended to utilize.
While there is not a way to reserve conference rooms on my unit, knowing where
to shift my teaching cohort to was easier due to my strong familiarity with the my
unit. If I had waited for the nursing cohort to end their post conference, my
window to engage with the coworkers in a clinical setting may have been
diminished.

Culture

 Articulates an understanding of how human behavior is affected by culture, race,

religion, gender, lifestyle, and age.

This assignment required me as the educator to perform an assessment of my

educational population. In regards to this project, my target audience were my
coworkers who are all female, and the age group ranged from 18-65. With a
multigenerational teaching cohort, teaching delivery methods were modified for
the preferred learning style. Additionally, job role was another factor that was
assessed. The two types of job titles that were used in this assignment were
registered nurses and nursing care partners. Peer coaching was identified as being
easier by some respondents are being easier to perform when each person was the
same job title.
