ABSTRACT

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to the accelerated use of e-learning. During
the COVID-19 lockdown, in addition to switching to distance learning or e-learning, most schools
used digital platforms to support learning instruction. Unfortunately, higher amount of time when
using online media may be problematic as these online platforms can be addictive. Online media
platforms promote constant scrolling and do not have a definite “stop point,” which is why they
can lead to individuals spending several hours on using these online platforms. Studies showed
that the increased number of uses of smartphone use, unfortunately, lead to the increased use
through applications such as social media and gaming that were highly conducted by individuals
with low levels of health literacy. Technology addiction is obviously a common problem that is
happening in the new normal. The current article will investigate factors of the adverse impact of
the prolonged e-learning use after pandemics and specifically on the effects of self-regulated
learning (SLR) in e-learning.
Method: This research used a systematic literature review, by selecting related articles using
keywords: self-regulated learning, e-learning during pandemic, student risk behavior, and,
smartphone addiction.
Results: Studies showed that SLR is one of the most important “academic enabler” in new normal.
Parenting style plays important role on developing SLR in the long run.
Conclusion: The current study suggests that strategies or policies related to promote self-regulated
learning, that eventually will also reduce students risk behaviors, and give insight of parenting
style in new normal era.
