Activity about: The Children of the City

1. Identify the plot of the story.

A. Denouement

- the final of the literary piece shows what and how’s life in the city. It shows the bitterness
side of life that has in the city. That the hardship choose no age, no matter how young and old you
are, if you are living in the city and working as a contractual employee, you should have to strive and
work to death to be able to live. It also shows that future of the children does not guaranteed when
poverty really hits them. Even the parents sometimes sell their own child for their own benefit. Thus,
the ending of the piece only shows how hard life is living in the city.

B. Rising Action

- Victor’s father and his co-workers have involved in a strike against their company to relay
their message and fight for their right as employees. The reason is that their company fired some
workers so they come up to have a strike because they wanted to have a compensation for their hard
work but it was being withheld from them. One night, an attack was occurred on the strikers’ location
to destroy their barriers and the strikers itself. Because of this incident, Victor’s father was shot and
killed by the police that night. Due to his father’s death, he (Victor) dropped out from school and had
to started a work as a news boy at an early age and his mother got an another man caused victor to
left alone and become lonely.

C. Climax

- when he is working as a news boy, Victor met another news boys but none of them wanted
to befriend him except Nacio. They became friends and treat each other like a family but one day,
Nacio suddenly met his death when he was hit by a car. After his death, Victor became lonely again
and because of that, when Victor alone met again those who ganged him up before, they tried to
persuade him to act like them and they’ve successfully persuaded him. Out of his mind, victor started
a commotion and he kicked and hit the blumentrit boys. He became the man he don’t expected
himself to become as well.

D. Falling Action

- after what happened between Victor and the blumentrit boys, the blumentrit boys offered a
reconciliation to Victor. As their way of reconciliation, they offered Victor a cigarette. If he decline to
accept it then there’s no reconciliation and if he accept it then the peace offering automatically
accepted.
E. Resolution

- Victor finally took down his last defence and accepted the peace offering the blumentrit boys
offered. Finally the fear that he has for the thugs were swept away and he already knew what life he
has in the current.

2. STIFLING – it is an act of being unable to breathe easily or suffocating for short.

3. SHANTIES – it is a structure that defines as a small or rough shelter. (Barung-barong)

5. LURKING – it is an act of being remain hidden so as to wait in ambush for someone or


something.

6. GAUDILY – it is a tasteless use of overly bright, often clashing colors or excessive


ornamentation.

1. How important for the employees to carry out a strike against their company?

2. What is the effect for the family members of the strikers when they are conducting a strike
and happened to lose their lives?

3. Does living in the city always hard and unequal?

4. How can a child living in the city fight the cruelness of life and poverty?

5. What actions should the government must do to help the poor and most especially the
homeless children living in the cruel city.
