Step 1 1 of 8

When we round a number to the

nearest hundreds, we look at the digit
on the immediate right of the hundreds
place.

When the digit is 5 or greater, we round

up i.e. we add 1 to the digit in the
hundreds place value and make all the
digits on its right 0.

When the digits 4 or lower, we round

down i.e the digit on the hundreds
place value remains the same but all
the digits on its right becomes 0.

Step 2 2 of 8

a) The digit to be considered is 4.

Digit 4 is in the range 4 or lower, thus

round down. The number becomes
78500.

Step 3 3 of 8

b) The digit to be considered is 5.

Digit 5 is in the range 5 or greater, thus

round up. The number becomes 6900.

Step 4 4 of 8

c) The digit to be considered is the

leftmost 9.

Digit 9 is in the range 5 or greater, thus

round up. The number becomes 14100.

Step 5 5 of 8

d) The digit to be considered is the

rightmost 8.

Digit 8 is in the range 5 or greater, thus

round up. The number becomes 8100.

Step 6 6 of 8

e) The digit to be considered is 5.

Digit 5 is in the range 5 or greater, thus

round up. The number becomes 1000.

Step 7 7 of 8

f) The digit to be considered is 8.

Digit 8 is in the range 5 or greater, thus

round up. The number becomes 3000.

Result 8 of 8

a. 78500 b. 6900 c. 14100 d. 8100 e.

1000 f. 3000
