Solving the MegaMinx

The Rules:
A. Solve the steps in this order (working downwards)
 Side – Corner – Side – Corner – Side – Corner – Side
 (flip)
 Side – Side – Corner - Corner
B. If it’s not the piece’s turn, it’s in the wrong place anyway.
C. If a piece has already been solved, you can still move it, but you have to put it back when you’re
done.

The Steps
1. Pick a color to solve first. It’s the Top side.
2. Side - Align that color’s side pieces to their correct side.

3. Corner - Move that color’s corner pieces to their correct corner, facing up.
4. Side - Solve the middle layer, aligning the middle pieces to the correct center pieces

5. Corner – Solve the adjacent corner

6. Side – Solve the adjacent sides.

7. Corner - Solve chevron corners.

8. Side – Solve the last sides before reaching the final level.

9. Flip it over so the unsolved level is on top

10. Side - Get the top layer’s corner pieces facing up.
11. Side - Rotate the side pieces to their correct spot (and facing up)
12. Corner – rotate the corners to their correct corner (they don’t have to be facing up).
13. Corner – solve the final level by rotating each corner to face up.
The Steps in Detail
1. First sides to form a star (n=5). The other edge should be aligned with its own color.
2. First corners on the top layer (n=5). Aligned with their corresponding side color
3. Second sides (n=5)– solve the same way as Rubik’s cube
4. Corner (n=5)– Form “legs” with top corner and middle piece. 3 colors align with middle tiles.
a. Move the piece into position, to align with the middle lower color matched
b. Simply rotate it into position
c. If a solved piece has to be moved, put it back before you move on.
d. If another piece looks solved, but it’s not its turn, it doesn’t matter yet.
5. Sides (n=10) - Solve the adjacent sides to the leg’s corner
a. Position the piece on the bottom, aligned to the middle layer’s color
b. Left side – LLaway2 - Down away - LLaway2 - Down toward - LLtoward2
i. LL’’ D’ LL’’ D LL2
c. Right side – LRaway2 - Down away – LRaway2 - Down toward - LRtoward2
i. LR2 D LR2 D’ LR’’
d. If it’s on the right row, but in the wrong place, position another piece in its place. That
will push it to the side
e. If it’s on the side instead of on the bottom, rotate it to the bottom (the right way up),
but be careful to move any solved corners back.
f. If it’s on the bottom but flipped, run the 4-move sequence (the solution to the next
corner level) twice to flip it back to the bottom.
g. Repeat for each side (n=10)
h. Result: top layer and middle layer solved.
6. Corner – Solve the point of the chevron
a. Rotate the bottom level to position the target piece below its desired position
b. 4-move sequence, performed 1-5 times, as needed
c. LRaway, LLaway, LRtoward, LLtoward
i. LR – LL’ – LR’ – LL
d. Repeat steps for each corner (n=5)
7. Side – solve the final side layer before the bottom
a. Rotate the bottom layer so that one of the edges of the target piece aligns to its middle
color.
b. Which sides need to move? LR and Bottom, or LL and Bottom?
c. 13-move sequence: Lower away, then (Bottom away / Lower Away) x 3, then (Bottom
toward / Lower toward) X 3
d. Left: LL’ – B – LL’ – B – LL’ – B – LL’ – B’ – LL – B’ – LL – B’ - LL
e. Right: LR – B’ – LR – B’ – LR – B’ – LR – B – LR’ – B – LR’ – B – LR’

4. Flip it over. Unsolved color is now on top.

Side 1

The first step in solving the last layer is to get all the side pieces facing up. It doesn’t matter if they’re in
the right place yet; you just need them all to face up.

There are three possible arrangements for the sides. One arrangement has only one facing up; the
other arrangements have 3 sides facing up. Your sequence is driven by the arrangement. In the case
where only one piece is facing up, then just pick either sequence and run it; one or the other 3-side
arrangements will result.

Sequence 1 - D F R F' R' D'

Sequence 2 - D R F R' F' D'

Sequence 3 - Either of the two above

Side 2

Now that all of the side pieces are facing up, we need to move them to their correct position. Rotate
the top layer so that 2 of the side pieces end up in their correct position. The 2 correct pieces will either
be adjacent to each other or have a piece between them.

 If they are adjacent, rotate the cube so that the correct sides are
at 11:00 and 1:00. The piece on the left (at 9:00) should need to
be moved to the right to 3:00. If this is not the case, rotate the
top layer some more to find two other correct pieces and repeat
this process. When you have the correct pieces at 11 and 1 and
the remaining pieces need to rotate clockwise, run the sequence.
Rt / F’ / Ra / F’ / Rt / F2 / Ra

 If the correct pieces are not adjacent, rotate the cube to position them
at 2 and 8. The piece at 11 should need to be moved clockwise to 4. If
this is not the case, find another pair of correct pieces, align them, and
check again. When you have the correct pieces at 2 and 8, with the
remaining pieces needing to move clockwise to their position, run the
sequence.
Rt / F’ / Ra / F” / Rt / F” / Ra
Corner 1

The next step is probably the most strategic. The sequence itself is simple and you end up running it
several times, but you have to understand what it does and plan your solution accordingly.

The objective is to move the corner pieces to their correct corner. Positions 2 and 5 are “safe”, meaning
they don’t move after the sequence; only the 3 pieces on the left (at 7, 10, and 12) move counter-
clockwise.

The ultimate objective is to move the corner pieces to their correct corner. The first objective is to get 2
adjacent pieces in their correct corner so you can move those 2 pieces into the “safe” positions at 2 and
5, so that the remaining pieces rotate around each other until they reach their correct position.

The sequence is simple enough:

F2 – Ra – F’’ - La - F2 - Rt - F’’ - Lt
First, see if any of the pieces are in their correct position already. If one is, rotate the cube so that it’s on
the right at 2 or 5. Locate the corner piece that should be adjacent to it, and decide how many runs of
the sequence it would take to move it to its correct position. Keep running the sequence and/or
rotating the cube until you have 2 pieces adjacent to each other in their correct position.

Then, rotate the cube to put these 2 pieces at 2 and 5, and repeat the sequence as many times as
necessary to move the final 3 pieces into their correct position.

Corners 2
Finally! The last step! This one is both the simplest and the most disconcerting. Simple because you
only move the Upper Right UR and Lower Right LR. Simple because there are only 4 moves to the
sequence. Simple because you repeat the sequence over and over again. Disconcerting because you
don’t stop doing the sequence until the entire puzzle is solved. Disconcerting because it looks like
you’re mangling all the work you’ve done up to this point. That is until the last couple of turns when it
all magically falls into place.

You’re solving the corner piece at the intersection of Top and UR. Once that corner is solved (facing up),
then you rotate the Top clockwise to get the next piece in that same corner, and repeat the sequence
again until that corner is solved. If a corner is already solved when you move it there, simply rotate Top
one more turn to get the next piece in position.

The sequence is UR’ LR’ UR LR

That’s it! You’ll see the corner piece get solved on the UR move, but you must remember to finish the
sequence with the final LR before rotating Top. You run the sequence once and if the piece isn’t solved,
you run it again. Run each piece through the sequence as many times as it takes. When the last piece is
solved, you’re done.
