Materials:  Markers
 Colored pencils
 Tempera paint
 Watercolor paint
 Drawing paper
 Sketch paper
 Crayons
 Smartboard
 Examples

Procedure:  Set up classroom space with all materials needed for the project,
making sure that all students are able to have access to the
materials needed. (Before class)
 Review contrasting colors and complementary colors, we will
also review lines and how they can move your eyes around the
art they are going to create. I will have students explain to me
how the color wheel is set up and what colors are
complementary and contrasting colors. (5-10 minutes)
 Give directions to students by saying, “Students today we are
going to create our own work of art, you have the freedom to
create whatever you would like but you need to use contrasting
or complementary colors. This can be done with markers,
colored pencils, paint, or crayon so create your art. When you
are done creating your art I want you to think of a caption that
can be added to your work so people get the message you are
creating” I will then show students examples on the board to
give them an idea, I will also have them share ideas. (10-15
minutes)
 I will then give students work time to create their art, while
reminding them half way through to start thinking about the
caption they are going to put on their art (30-50 minutes)
 I will ask students to clean up their spaces and put all supplies
back where they belong. (5-8 minutes)
 I will then have students share their art with the other students
at their tables (7 minutes)
 Students will then return to their seats to complete the VTS

questions and write about the art they have created. (5 minutes)
Assessment:  I will assess students informally during the discussion about
colors and lines, I will assess their understanding based on their
answer to my questions.
 I will then formally assess the artwork they created by making
sure they used complementary or contrasting colors in their
artwork and creating a caption that goes with their work.
Exercises of visual literacy  Creating a caption allows students to think more deeply about
skills. the art they have created and how they want other people to
see their work.
 Students have to create a meaningful peace of art using
different types or drawing and painting objects allowing them to
learn and engage with different types of art, they also work on
their skill they choose to use.
