BHPY3074 MOTIVATION AND EMOTION

ASSIGNMENT BRIEF

AIM
 The main aim of this module is to provide you with the basic concepts and theories in
understanding the mechanism of human behaviors, where motivation and emotion as the
foundations, and to becoming literate and critical consumers of psychological studies.
OBJECTIVES
 To examine concepts and issues related to motivation and emotions
 To develop awareness of the roles of psychologists in helping people to understand their
behaviors and emotions

ASSESSMENT
Assessment for this module consist of two components detailed below:
 Assessment 1 - Written Essay (Individual) (50%): Details of this assessment component
are provided below.
 Assessment 2 – Presentation (Group) (50%): Based on the essay topic in Assessment 1,
you are required to prepare for a presentation.

Details for Assessment 1 (Due Date: Submit Week 6 during lecture)

You are required to work INDIVIDUALLY and produce an 1800-word academic essay.

 Students MUST answer the question provided in the titles above exactly. Changes to the
title will NOT be accepted and changes will be assumed to be evidence of possible
plagiarism or copying and essays will be subjected to special scrutiny. Changes to the title
may make the essay impossible to mark, even if there is no evidence of plagiarism. Please
be very careful to ensure that the final written product is your own work.
 Please note that word limits on this assignment need to be carefully observed. A variation
of up to +/- 10% on word limits will be accepted, but if you exceed this variation you will
be penalized. Again, this regulation is put in place to ensure that comparisons across
assignments are fair to all students.
 Late submission of assignment will be penalized by 10 marks per day, and submission
more than 3 days late receive no marks, unless justifiable reason is being provided.
Extensions based on non-medical considerations will only be approved in exceptional
circumstances, and approval should normally be sought before the due date for the
assignment. These regulations are put in place to ensure that all students are treated
equally and fairly.
 Assignments must be submitted with a completed and signed cover sheet (the cover
sheet is provided in the appendix)
Details for Assessment 2 (Commence in Week 8)

This assignment is designed to provide experience in working in a small group to research


relevant empirical psychological literature, decide on presentation format and present material to
your whole tutorial group.
Due to the word limits set for Assessment 1, you may not be able to include all information in your
writing, therefore, you are required to write your essay in a concise manner. Hence, in Assessment
2, you are required to work with other students (in a group of 5 – 6 students) to combine and
include a broaden information in your presentation. You are also required to prepare activities
and questions for discussion for your participants during the presentation.
It is expected that each student will make some form of oral presentation for during the course of
the presentation. Each group will be allocated 70 minutes for entire presentation. You will
receive a group mark for the presentation.
If you are experiencing difficulties within your group, and you feel this is to the detriment of your
marks, then you must speak to your tutor as soon as possible. Complaint make after the
presentation will not be entertained.
Students are encouraged to make presentations as creative and interesting as possible but all
presentations must include:
 A clear statement of your group’s argument
 A critical analysis of the topic
 Discussion of at least two relevant empirical research articles pertaining to the topic
 Prepare at least one activity in relation to the topic to enhance the understanding of your
participants
 Provision of a website or sites for interested participants
 A handout for your participants
