Student will conduct a 40 minutes (+/- 10 minutes) specific Psychotherapy session with a
classmate and write a report on the experience, incorporating own and the classmate’s feedback.
This session is to be video-recorded by the student and assessed by the student, “client”, and
lecturer on a Checklist of Skills that will be provided. Take note that all ethical and professional
practices apply here. Failure to maintain confidentiality, for instance, and manifest behaviors
that harm the client either physically or psychologically and acts that harm the client’s
reputation and integrity will be considered unethical and will be investigated by the ethics
committee and may possibly result to your disciplinary actions or expulsion from the program.
A video tape for each student and a 10-12 page report should be handed in to the lecturer.
THE INTERVIEW:
i. Conducted in pair. The therapist should aim to let their ‘natural’ style come through,
but keep in mind the microskills and Any Specific Psychotherapy skills.
ii. The client should choose an ‘issue’ carefully – possibly a dilemma or unresolved
problem that will provide sufficient substance for the therapist. The client is best
advised not to be overly ‘compliant’ (try to ‘help’ the therapist out too much), or
alternatively to attempt to make things too ‘difficult’, etc; in other words, try to let the
interview unfold as naturally as possible.
THE REPORT
i. Include a short introduction describing the exercise you’ve been asked to complete, and
its aims as you see them.
ii. Briefly describe the clients presenting problem/s.
iii. Report on the effectiveness of the therapy and your level of skills mastery in terms of
the microskills learned to date. Highlight what you consider are the most effective and
least effective interactions.
iv. Where there are interactions, you think are problematic due to nervousness, include
what your preferred response/s may have been.
v. Incorporate your client’s feedback.
vi. Your personal reflections in an exercise like this are always valid; at minimum, the
concluding comments should summarise your overall satisfaction with your therapy
performance. Include specific reflections from journal entries kept throughout the
semester.
vii. Describe any strategies which you believe would enhance your effectiveness in the
future.
viii. The report should be presented in an organised way following the guidelines noted
above, and have a readable narrative flow, with accurate use of terminology.
