Overview and How consultation resources
Introduction and collaboration
work in mtss
Maintaining a Culturally Sustaining Lens
Consultation and collaboration are both
effective tools in addressing inequities on a
school campus. With these tools we can...
Engage families and community
members as educational partners
Critically examine school data and
create action plans
Collaborate with administration to
dismantle systems disproportionately
impacting certain groups of students (Antiracist Education, 2022)

(Goodman-Scott et al., 2019)

Consultation
a triadic relationship in which Collaboration
the consultant works a relationship between two or
closely with a consultee to more parties to reach common
help and better serve a goals
student or group of students

(Cholewa B., Laundy, K., 2019)

Consultation stages
1. Initiate consulting

relationship
2. Define the problem and

set goals
3. Select

strategy/intervention
4. Implement

strategy/intervention
5. Evaluate
(Cholewa B., Laundy, K., 2019)
6. Terminate
Collaboration
Shared Responsibility + Shared Leadership

Collaboration can look like:

Having an MTSS Creating classroom
Coordinating with lessons with the
team
stakeholders about other school
Needs family information counselors
Assessments nights

(Goodman-Scott et al., 2019)

Role of the School Counselor

Asca position statement

"School counselors collaboratively support the process of MTSS
universal screening for mental health (Donohue et al., 2016),
academic and behavioral supports. The school counselor may
also provide indirect student service by presenting data or
serving as a consultant to a student support team. The school
counselor engages as part of the leadership team in MTSS but
should not be the sole leader of MTSS in our buildings
(Goodman-Scott, et al., 2020, p. 33)."
(ASCA, 2022)
Role of the School Counselor

of interventions, advocate for MTSS

professionals student needs

(Goodman-Scott et al., 2019)

Navigating Difficulties on MTSS Teams
1. Inherent differences between disciplines
Knowing the scope of practice for each profession and how to effectively consult
and collaborate with different members of the team
Importance of cultual awareness and humility: increase in rich conversations by
recognizing the internal policies, roles, services, and relationships within schools

2. Shift from linear to systemic thinking

Members can get stuck in a strict idea of their role: "I teach math, not behavior"
Important to get to the root of any hesitancy or resistance, that way you know how
to properly support the members of the MTSS team

3. Challenge of funding
Competition for jobs is high and funding is scarce
Important to ADVOCATE for the importance of MTSS initiatives and teams
(Goodman-Scott et al., 2019)

strengths-based approach for closing
opportunity gaps. Counselors can go
on the website to learn more about
MTSS and its method. In addition, they
have articles about their strategies in
use at schools all over the United
States.
