a. if a vowel precedes the y, add s to make the plural

b. if a consonant precedes the y, change the y to i and add es.

Most nouns that end in f or fe change their endings in the plural to ves.

half-halves wife-wives knife-knives

Nouns ending in o and preceded by a consonant form the plural by adding
es.
