Welcome Address

Dear Participants,

I would like to extend a warm welcome to those industrial, academic and

commercial professionals from across the globe who are engaged in the
challenge to achieve highly efficient power conversion systems and
sustainable environmental protection through advances in power
electronics components and systems. The PCIM conference together with
the exhibition has evolved over the years as a major technical platform
for discussing new developments within the field of power electronics in
the conference seminars and demonstrating new achievements at the
exhibition stands.
We have once again this year seen an increase in the number and quality
of papers submitted and selected the best and most important for
inclusion in the program of oral and poster presentations. The 3-day
technical meeting highlights the likely direction of future technological
advances and provides a platform for debate and discussion with the
experts. Special attention has been given to research carried out by young
engineers; the presentation of the Young Engineers and Best Paper Awards
at the opening ceremony ranks amongst the conference highlights.
Several new fields of application including e-mobility, wind power, solar
power and new energy storage concepts developed from distributed
power systems may open up a variety of excellent business opportunities
and attractive new job opportunities for both young and experienced
engineers. However they also present new technological challenges
especially in helping meet the requirements of energy efficient power
conversion systems, energy storage and the grid connection of distributed
power systems.
This year’s PCIM Conference will address many of these topics. The key
note speeches in particular will address the so-called mega-trend topics
such as E-Mobility, SMART-Grid and Energy Efficient Power Conversion
Systems. A special session and Round Table Meeting will highlight the
likely trends for the future development of key components and systems.
The Sessions and Poster Presentations will all offer an opportunity for
learning about the latest technological advances in high efficiency power
conversion systems and the next generation of key power devices for
future applications.
I am convinced that with its high level technical program and discussion
platform this year’s PCIM Conference will provide you with an overview
of the key technological developments in power electronics and inspire
you to pursue new business opportunities.
I wish you an enjoyable and successful conference packed with new ideas
for your future business.

The goal of developing AC-DC converters with

Isolation and Power Factor Correction feature in
a single power processing stage and without a
mandatory fullbridge rectifier has for years
eluded Power Electronics researchers.
Present AC-DC converters operated from a
single-phase ac line are based on conventional
PWM switching method and process the power

Infineon Technologies Munich, Germany consisting of just three switches and a single
magnetic component albeit at a much higher
efficiency approaching 98% and having a
0.999 power factor and 1.7% total harmonic
distortion.
The ultimate solution is reached in an Isolated,
Bridgeless, Three-phase AC-DC converter with
Unity Power Factor (designated here Three-
Phase rectifierTM ), which converts the three-
phase input power directly into a desired high
frequency isolated DC output voltage (48V for
telecommunications, 12V for data centers, etc.)
again in a single power processing stage, but
employing three isolation transformers
operating at high switching frequency of 100kHz.
The intermediate 400V high voltage DC bus of
conventional three-phase AC-DC rectifiers is also
eliminated resulting in direct cost and size
benefits, while the high efficiency of 98% and
other performance features of the above Single-
phase rectifierTM solution are fully preserved.
The Three-phase rectifierTM, processes the
power in parallel and equally through each
phase, resulting in additional size and cost
savings. For example, a 1.2kW AC-DC converter
is processing 400W power in parallel through
each phase. The conventional three-phase
approaches are incapable to do that and must
process the full 1.2kW power through its second
power processing stage, the Isolated DC-DC
converter stage. Three-Phase rectifierTM takes a
full advantage of Tesla’s three-phase trans-
mission system to convert constant
instantaneous input power directly to a constant
DC output power, albeit isolated at high
switching frequency, with near unity power
factor (0.999), low total harmonic distortion
(1.7%), smaller size and lower cost but at ultra
high efficiency of 98%.

The keynote speech will give an overview of the
smart grids concept and the role of power
electronics to make it reality, including several
examples of smart grids demonstrators where
power electronics is a key technology.

From a technical point of view, there are three

main domains that have shown big improve-

transistors reducing switching losses significantly.
SiC transistors are currently sampled as JFETs, MOSFETs

to be a lead application for SiC. At the same time another
rising star appears at the horizon, GaN allowing hetero-
epitaxy on Si wafers. This offers new opportunities
regarding costs and co-integration with Si device
technology. Will this new material compete against
SiC or will we GaN occupy complementary applications
in the voltage and frequency range?
