Adjectives are mostly stressed on the first syllable: ha ppy /ˈhæpi/.
Nouns are mostly stressed on the first syllable: mo ther /ˈmʌðɚ/.

Verbs are mostly stressed on the second syllable: a rrive /əˈraɪv/.

Prepositions and connectors are mostly stressed on the second
syllable: be hind /bɪˈhaɪnd/, be fore /bɪˈfɔr/ .

Exceptions: ho tel /hoʊˈtɛl/ / un der /ˈʌndər/
