1.0.0 PURPOSE :
The purpose of this procedure is to lay guidelines and requirement and to
establish a method for ultrasonic examination in the construction of KGPL
GR.17 Project.
2.0.0 SCOPE:
This is a general procedure, which describes Examination of weld of
pipelines, by using Ultrasonic flaw detector with pulse echo contact beam
method.
This procedure is useful for examination of welds of single wall of pipes,
bevel ends, pipe seam in case of hot pull bending, welds in fillet joints
(frequency ‘of examination will be as per the direction of engineer-in-
charge), arc-burn outside pipe bevel which are removed by grinding, etc.
The UT will be carried out by professional/ experienced agency duly
approved by IHB/IOCL
3.0.0 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS :
ASME Section-V Article-4, Article-5 & 23 (latest edition)
API-1104 - latest edition
ASNT SNTC- 1A/ ANSI CP-189
ASTM E213
ASTM E273

4.0.0 PERSONAL QUALIFICATION :
The qualification of the NDT inspector to carry out this testing shall be
minimum ASNT level II in ultrasonic testing method as described in Para
11.4.3, API 1104, TWENTIETH Edition. The operator shall be able to:
4.1.0 Calibrate the equipment;
4.2.0 _ Perform an operational test under production conditions;
4.3.0 _ Interpret the screen picture;
4.4.0 _ Evaluate the size and location of reflectors
4.5.0 _ Interpret the type of defects detected
5.0.0 EQUIPMENT & ACCESSORIES :
5.1.0UItrasonic Flaw Detector, A scan type, meeting the requirements of T- 530
of Article 5 of ASME Section V.

6.0.0 STANDARD & REFERENCE BLOCKS:
6.1.0 1.1. WV1 AND / OR L.I.W. V2,
6.2.0 Notch Block for D.A.C. as shown in fig 1
7.0.0 CALIBIRATION OF ULTRASONIC FLAW DETECTOR (UFD):
The calibration of the UFD shall be carried out in accordance with ASME
section-V, Article 5 or specific written procedure for its vertical & horizontal
linearity once in every six month or after repair of UFD whichever is earlier
In addition to the above, Amplitude control correction, Beam spread, Index
point, beam angle & resolution will be checked and the type, method &
frequency will be as per the IHB/IOCL’s Technical specifications
8.0.0 DISTANCE AMPLITUDE CORRECTION CURVE (D.A.C. CURVE):
Following steps shall be carried out to obtain a DAC curve for angle probe.
8.4.0 Calibrate the screen range as required beam path using V1 or V2
standard block.
8.2.0 Apply couplant to the notched bar reference block.
83.0 Take echo from hole maximize at 80%, (#5%) and mark.
8.4.0 Note down the db.
8.5.0 _ Repeat the same for full skip and mark.
8.6.0 Draw the curve connecting two marks.
9.0.0 SURFACE CONDITION :
‘All surfaces shalll be clean and free of scale, dirt, grease, paint, spatters or
any other foreign materials. Surface shall be smooth to carry out effective
test. The DB correction shall be done, if surface is not smooth as reference
block.
10.0.0 PROBE SELECTION :
‘The combination of probes in addition to normal probes shall be selected as
per specific requirement or as per thickness of the pipe.
11.0.0 SCANNING:
Scanning shall be done by using normal probe for inspecting lamination
Hundred percent areas shall be scanned on both side of the welds using
longitudinal and shear wave probes. Length of scanning shall be minimum
of % Beam Path to 1 % Beam Path on both the side of weld.

12.0.0 PROCUDURE :
Unless otherwise specified, inspect the weld on both sides by using
longitudinal & shear wave probes.
42.1.0 LONGITUDINAL WAVE PROBE :
The scanning shall be carried out before and after welding on base metal to
confirm any inherent or after weld discontinuity, with reference to first back
wall echo 80% + 5%. During scanning with longitudinal wave probe, full
contact and echo height shall be maintained. The Area of scanning shall be
100% Beam path on both the side of pipe weld. This scanning will reveal
discontinuity with major surface parallel to scanning surface.
12.2.0 SHEAR WAVE PROBE
With respect to DAC, Scanning shall be carried out on both sides of weld to
determine discontinuity within the weld & base metal, which are not parallel
to scanning surface. Both the probes to be scanned individually on both the
sides. The scanning shall cover at least % Beam Path to 1% Beam Path.
Unless & otherwise specified, circumferential direction ‘scanning shall be
carried out on base metal.
43.0.0 PERODIC CHECK OF SCREEN CALIBIRATION :
Calibration of screen shall be checked prior to any of the inspection run,
prior to equipment shut down and at least in every 4 hours during
continuous equipment operation. Recalibrate the equipment in accordance
with section 9 (Standard practice for ultrasonic inspection of metallic pipes
& tubing) of ASME Section-V, Article-23. At any period of time, the
equipment doesn't present a clearly defined, rejectable signal from both the
inner and outer surface notches of the standard block.
14.0.0 INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS :
All indications that are equal to or greater than rejection level established
during calibration, as described in acceptance’ rejection criteria in section
16 of this procedure or agreed by client's inspector only shall be considered
representing defects and may cause for rejection repair of the weld or base
metal
45.0.0 ACCEPTANCE OR REJECTION CRITERIA :
‘Acceptance or rejection criteria shall be in accordance with API-1104 or as
specified in IHB/IOCL’s technical specifications. All the defect locations
shall be marked or recorded for repair.
