what is the status of your research problem on a holistic or


national or world perspective?
English language becomes the global language over the years.

It connects people’s races in the world to communicate with one

another. It is the language of international of borderless

communication, the media and the internet. Historically, due to

its many speakers across the globe, it has become as a subject of

discipline integrated in the curriculum. Using English language

when speaking requires clear background or understanding of the

essential elements or features such as pronunciation. Speaking is

an important competency which should be learned by the students,

in order for them to interact well in their classes.

2. what is the condition that is directly related to the focus of


your study?
Students’ fluency of the English language in a manifestation

of their competencies in pronunciation, vocabulary and the

content. The four speaking skills is fluency, vocabulary, grammar

and pronunciation, are the goals to have communicative

efficiency. Learners should be able to communicate in order for

them to understand and be understood of others. They should also

try to clarify points in order to avoid confusion, as this

happens due to faulty pronunciation, grammar or vocabulary as

speakers, they should also observe the social and cultural rules

that apply in each communication situation.


Speaking is significant it is our second language skill. It

can be planned and rehearsed as the delivery of a speech or

presentation. Moreover, it is the language skill that most

language learners wish to perfect. When an individual, creates

sound using many parts of the body, including the lungs, vocal

tract, vocal cords, tongue, teeth and lips. Students’ confidence

in speaking English in their classes is also influenced by

affective factors which includes anxiety and self-restriction

that can seriously affect speaking ability and prevent a student

to participate.

3. What are the factors contributing to the focus of your study?


Cheryl and Cordell (2007) believed that communicator anxiety

can obstacle to effective communication. Anxiety is about the

fear of being wrong or unhelpful. Students in anxiety lose their

words or stops saying something.

According to Macintyre and Gardner (1991), anxiety is two

types: situational and trait. They defined anxiety is a result of

speaker’s personal feelings that are not related to situation. It

is paramount to speak English nowadays since it provides all

kinds of opportunities in communication, life quality and

education. In the Philippines, English and Tagalog are the two

main languages used to teach in schools. Yet, students face

problem in learning to speak because they have different social


background, educational background, lack of exposure and too much

influenced by their mother language or L1. The student of UEP-

PRMC find it difficult to speak English and with this difficulty,

their confidence level is being lessened thus, it sometimes

affects their academic performance. They find it hard to employ

English when interacting and participating as they are used to

using Filipino and Ninorte Samarnon.

4.What is the current status of your research problem in your


research locale?

The purpose of the current study is to determine factors

which affect the level of confidence in speaking English language

among Junior High School students of UEP-PRMC. Students of UEP-

PRMC find it difficult to speak English and with this difficulty,

their confidence level is being lessened thus, it sometimes

affects their academic performance. They find it hard to employ

English when interacting and participating as they are used to

using Filipino and Ninorte Samarnon.

5. why did you choose to study the research problem?


The researchers would like to conduct the study in the

University of Eastern Philippines Laboratory High School -

Catubig since, it is the school where they study, it will

facilitate the researchers in the conduct of the study, and more


importantly through this study, they want to contribute on how

students would develop their speaking skills better.
