ENGINEERING PROPERTIES
MOISTURE CONTENT
(With reference to clause 7 of BS1377: Part 7: 1990)

Introduction

The traditional methods of conducting laboratory activities will not be able to

provide the avenue for students to enhance independent learning activities and
inculcate creativity and innovation. Level 0 is fully prescriptive where problems,
ways & means and answers are provided to the students. However it is still
necessary especially to first and second year students. Water is present in the most
naturally occurring soils. The amount of water, expressed as a proportion by mass
of the dry solid particles, now as the moisture content, has a profound effect on soil
behavior.

Objectives
PREAMBLE
To determine the moisture content of soils, w %.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the laboratory activities, students would be able to:

1. acquire the understanding of engineering properties of soils in
determination of the unconfined compressive strength
2. acquire the necessary skill to prepare sample and conduct force measuring
device and the axial deformation gauges in performing standard laboratory
3. calculate and analyze data to report and present result in a proper
engineering format.

Moisture content is required as a guide to classification of natural soil and as a

control criterion in a recompacted soil and is measured on samples used for most

field and laboratory tests.
Procedure
1.The container was cleaned and dried. Then the container had been weighted
and label as m1.
2. A 30 g of wet soil sample had been weight and place in the container.
WAYS & MEANS
3. The container fill the wet soil sample had been weight and recorded in data
sheet as m2.
4. Then the container placed in an oven for drying process overnight (for 12 to 16
hour) at temperature of 110°C ± 5°C.

5. Removed the container from oven and waited to cool to room temperature.
Then recorded the mass of container with dried soil as m3.

Sample Calculation:
Mass moisture:
1- 44.12-41.18 = 2.94
2- 47.11-44.16 = 2.95
3- 46.10-43.01 = 3.09

Mass of dry soil:

1- 41.18-20.12 = 21.06
2- 44.16-20.08 = 24.08
3- 43.01-20.00 = 23.01

Moisture content:
1- 2.94/21.06 = 0.14
0.14 x 100 = 14%
2- 2.95/24.08 = 0.12
0.12 x 100 = 12%
DATA ANALISIS
3- 3.09/23.01 = 0.13
0.13 x 100 = 13%

Average moisture content:

(14+12+13) / 3 = 13 %
The moisture content of sample soil was determined. The value of moisture
CONCLUSION
content in the sample soil is 13%
In order to determine moisture content, the oven drying method is commonly
used. Water is absorbed as a result of heating, and the weight lost as a result of
water vaporization is taken as the weight of moisture. The moisture content is
13% as a result of the experiment. We use ( M2-M3 / M2-M1 ) to calculate the
moisture content, where M1 is the mass of the container, M2 is the mass of the

container with a wet sample, and M3 is the mass of the container with a dry

sample. Several errors occurred during the experiment, according to the results.
The first is a parallax error that occurs while measuring the mass of a sample.
Then, to prevent mistakes in the experiment, carefully read the readings before
recording the results.
