How crime is seen by people is an often debated topic that often divides
opinion, if it has risen, or if it the news are trustworthy, are typical questions. In order
to clarify some of the common points mentioned in the talk of the people is why this
essay has been written.
Firstly, we must bear in mind that the idea of crime rate can be expressed in
several different ways. In other words, we can argue saying that the crime is rising
because we saw it on a global study, but at the same time another person could say it
is not true cause he has been robbed twice on that same week. Therefore, it is almost
impossible to reach an agreement within the society, even when the people asked are
from the exact same neighbourhood.
According to that, is why local research are made, in the theory if we have
registered every crime in the zone for a fixed time we could tell, without bias, how its
rate went. However, here we have another issue, a research can be easily designed to
develop specific results, and even if they were all made under the same conditions, the
governments are always trying to manipulate the media to not let the people doubt
about their administration.
In my personal opinion, the only way to get to know how much crimes are
increasing or decreasing is by checking it on periodic studios of a fully trustworthy
team, it could be the ministry or similars, but it is important to not get misinformed by
the yellowishness of the media. Also, it is helpful to get to know if the proposals of the
government to get rid of crime are being into activity, if the authorities are not doing
anything, it is going to be highly suspicious to see results showing improvement.

Dear Mr. or Mrs. Director,
I have recently saw your article about different nationalities about the world, I
found it quite interesting, especially because some of those stereotypes mentioned are
different in my local culture. I believe it could be a good idea to share some of those
typical views of people around here in Uruguay, to let you know how they differ from
yours.
Our most common “prejudges” are from those living next to us, Argentinians
and Brazilians. Firstly, with Argentinians we have an alike way of thinking as the rest of
the world, they are a little arrogants, always talking about themselves and trying to be
better than the others, arguing in every specific detail. But with this country, we have a
lot in common, besides our traditional rivalry, they have lots of traditions which are in
fact the same, although they are always saying we copied them. So, it is easy to talk to
them, and they are also extremely funny, this in fact could be because they want to be
the centre of attentions, but it works.
Then we have Brazilians, and with them we don’t have so much things shared,
not even the language, but stereotypes are always there. The first thing that comes to
mind when thinking on them, is their carnival, the samba specifically. They are always
dancing and shouting, and their language makes them sound funnier, with a lot of
colors and happiness. But that part it is only for a limited time, then we see Brazil as a
dangerous place, when we listen to a bloody and morbid new, often it comes from
there, and knowing it is the country with most murderers per year in the world make it
almost a fact.
I believe that, to both countries in general we are like a little brother, someone
that is there and do their things, and sometimes we bother them the needed to fight
or argue, specially talking about football, but at the end they know we are never going
to be an menace to them. At the end, we are also latins, and that join us because we
live in same conditions, far apart from the first world.
I hope this few comments were interesting and could help you for a future
article, Thanks for reading,
Matías Corvetto
