outdoor area for gathering. (And “you’ll save on water consumption as opposed to maintaining a lawn,” designer Kate

Elevate Your Oasis

If you have a sloped backyard or
need a platform to see the best view,
you might want to add a raised deck
instead of a patio. It can be attached to
the house or freestanding, with one or
more levels. Source a material that
won’t fall apart in the elements:
TimberTech’s Advanced PVC decking,
made from high-performance and
recycled polymers, truly looks and
feels like real wood—but resists mold
and won’t splinter, warp, or rot.

A FRESH OUTLOOK FOR A
HISTORIC CALIFORNIA HOME

D
esigning a new outdoor
space using the bones of
an 1800s farmhouse is
no easy task. LA-based
designer Erin Fetherston turned
to TimberTech to install natural-
looking composite decking at
the historic Hoope’s House in
Napa Valley. The durability of the
brand’s decking material means
minimal maintenance —key for this
rental property.
Directly off the open-plan kitchen
and overlooking the vineyard
vistas, it’s the ideal spot to enjoy a
glass of wine.

THE DESIGNER’S VISION

TEXTURE “I wanted to create an indoor-outdoor floor plan, so the deck was
a crucial part of the design since I wanted everything to flow naturally.”
TimberTech offers premium natural-looking composite and PVC decking in a
variety of unique finishes and colors to give the look and feel of real wood.
Erin picked from the Advanced PVC Landmark Collection, one of the highest
performing, most realistic looking products on the market.

COLOR “I wanted to pick a historically appropriate wood to fit the aesthetic.

I used TimberTech’s new color, French White Oak, because it has a beautiful
weathered light gray undertone that fit into the design palette perfectly.”
Erin’s bright, light, and airy style paired flawlessly with TimberTech’s French White
Oak. A light, organic hue with subtle shades of oak, warm grays, and tannins that
deliver the look of hardwoods prized by European craftsmen, TimberTech is made
from about 60% recycled material, and stays cooler for those hot California days.

DURABILITY “Since this is a vacation rental, I wanted a high-quality

product that was low-maintenance, long-lasting, and durable for any season.”
BY TimberTech’s products are made from high-performance and recycled polymers,
making them resistant to moisture damage so they don’t splinter, crack, or warp. And
because the TimberTech Advanced PVC collections have a Class A Flame Spread
Rating and/or WUI-compliance, they’re the perfect choice for California fire zones.
A beautiful outdoor space
for our guests that will
last a lifetime.

set the house on fire). Typically you need at least five feet of open
space above an open-flame rangetop. If your kitchen is up against
a wall, pick a heat- and fire-resistant backsplash—and add a vent.
Even though you’re cooking outdoors, open air alone may not be
enough to move out smoke and pollutants. A stand-alone, out-
door-rated stainless steel hood is straightforward to install, or you
can hide a vent insert inside a more decorative custom hood.

A Tale of Two Gardens

In Fairfield County, Connecticut, two landscape designs rely on clean, formal
geometry—but with strikingly different results. By Owen Holmes

Cutting Garden
Landscape architect Janice
Parker carefully considered how
this area would be viewed from
the back of the home, particu-
larly as one passes through the
porte cochere. Beds are made
from corten steel, chosen for its
strength and rusty patina.

mount was revolutionary when
English gardener John Brookes
began preaching as much in the
late 1960s. But his protégé, Janice
Parker, now an award-winning
landscape architect and the
botanical brains behind this gar-
den for a Fairfield County family,
took the advice to heart. “We’re
trying to make a series of rooms
outside that are welcoming, that
pull people out,” she explains.
Various manicured terraces,
seating and dining areas, and
recreational spaces divide the
11-acre property, each one pain-
stakingly aligned with rooms
inside the house for optimal
views. Parker credits a simple
but effective grid scheme with
keeping it navigable: “We know
this layout on a primal level,”
she says. “It rings a bell in our
deepest reptilian mind.”

fennel now fills in the formal

Pampalone was a novice
gardener when he and his wife,
Arlene Carpenter, bought this
Fairfield County property in
1995. It took him three years to
clear the neglected land (pre-
serving the heirloom irises and
peonies) and a decade for his
garden plans to come to fruition.
His self-guided gardening educa-

across Europe, where he learned

have the bones,” he explains.
Flowers follow—with or without
intervention from the local
fauna. “Cede control to Mother

“You’ll be pleasantly surprised by

a dream. Her late mother’s friends
were throwing her a baby shower at
a beautiful old Colonial home across

was like, This is magical. I want to live

Thirteen years, a blossoming career,
and two (more) babies later, Annie and
her husband, Jeffery, got up the courage
to make an offer. “We said, ‘We’ll make
this house beautiful. We’ll carry on the
legacy of this home,’” Annie recalls.

THE STYLE
AUTHORITY
@hausguerin

At age eight, Kaelyn Guerin

decorated her first room using “a
bed-in-a-bag from JCPenney,”
the now 37-year-old recalls. “I’ve
been putting my mark on spaces
ever since.” Her grown-up
style is welcoming and elegant,
showcased from the Mississippi
home where she broadcasts
styling, shopping, and design
tips. Guerin says, “Social media
allows me to show how a well-
designed space can work
for a person and their family.”

“Be yourself and do you,” Megan Zietz says. “Don’t get caught
up in the comparison game.” Her blog, TfDiaries, originally
covered fashion but evolved into home design (heavy on the
retro wallpaper). “I started dressing my home like I would
dress myself: lots of color, prints, and maximalism,” says the
36-year-old, whose content stands out amid a sea of beige.

@emilyrayna

Skyrocketing to TikTok fame

in 2020 after convincing her
parents to let her renovate
their home (without spending

new career. “I never viewed
being a content creator as
a possibility for myself as a

Through her work, and with
a refreshingly approachable

quick 10 minutes from bustling down-
town Napa, but it feels worlds away. The
region’s newest American Viticultural
Area (AVA), it has a unique volcanic
soil that produces old-world style wine,
and the quiet hills extend for miles.
“It’s totally private and frankly a little
rustic,” Justin Hafen says. As cofound-
ers of the design firm HurleyHafen and
exemplary hosts, he and his partner,
John Hurley, were the perfect couple to
steward a parcel of this unfettered land-
scape—and share it with their friends.
High on a hillside, they built a contem-
porary home that doubles as a venue for
every kind of gathering.
The design of the house is forward
thinking but conscious of its agri-
cultural roots: A modern, low-slung
structure was built with firesafe materi-
als like steel but is set within a grove of
centuries-old olive trees (many of which
were craned in from another town).
Inside, custom modern bookcases cor-
ral an extensive collection that includes
a first-edition Charles Dickens novel.
Outside, there’s a pool, a meditation
and massage area, various canopied
lounges, a bar, and a bocce ball court
that turns into a dance floor. The
grounds share a gardener with The
French Laundry, the famed birthplace
of farm-to-table cuisine. So whatever
herbs and lettuces are on that menu are
also likely to be served at Bar HuHa, the
couple’s name for their backyard bar.
“Hospitality is in our blood,” Hafen says.
“We always think about how a home
really lives.”
While the house is well suited as a
venue for a Harry Styles–themed soiree,
as one recent invite described, it was
built for more intimate gatherings.
“Pretty much everything was designed
with our daughter in mind,” Hafen says.
“When we were building it, she was
engaged, so we were thinking about
where we’d have parties for her and
where, you know, her kids would play. ”
