EFFECTS OF NOISE

Short term effects

• Damage to ear drum
• Damage to ear ossicles

Temporary Threshold Shift (TTS)

• Hearing loss suffered as a result of noise
exposure, all or part of which recovers
after it is removed from exposure to
noise
Permanent Threshold Shift (PTS)
• May lead to deafness
• Resembles TTS
• Recovery not complete

MANUAL HANDLING
Problems at workplace:

• Manual handling / force

• Excessive force requirements
• Weight of loads lifted, pushed or pulled (material handlng)
• Frequency
• High rates of repetition Excessive Force Vibration
• Duration
• Posture
• Awkward work posture
• Position of a load in relationship to the spinal axis
• Vibration
• E.g Use of grinder, jack hammer
• Lack of sufficient rest (recovery period)
page 22

to manageable weight, get
assisstant or use handling aids
(trolleys), do not apply excessive
force.

documents eg JHA, Lifting Plan and driving license, vehicle documents
Spading List and entry pass. No overloading and
no passenger in the goods
compartment.

LOCK OUT TAG OUT (LOTO) HOUSEKEEPING & SIGNAGES

Ensure all sources of energy are Keeping work areas neat and orderly
isolated before work start. and provide safety signage as a
mean of visual communication for all
the workers and other people.

DEALING WITH AN EMERGENCY

In the event of an emergency, what you
should know:
✓ Know the worksite emergency plan/escape
route
✓ Know your role (based on emergency
procedure)
✓ Know your Competent First Aiders
✓ Be calm and help others
✓ Take note of previous training / drills
✓ Know who to notify in an emergency
situation

DEALING WITH FIRE EMERGENCY 1

✓ Wherever you are in the plant, on
hearing a: FIRE or OTHER ALARM

✓ You MUST:
1. Stop work;
2. Shutdown equipment; and
3. Proceed to EMERGENCY
ASSEMBLY / MUSTER POINT (if safe
You are required to give your full cooperation
to the First Response Team. to do so)

DEALING WITH FIRE EMERGENCY 2

• If you are in a vehicle, on hearing a:

FIRE ALARM

• You MUST:

1. Park in a safe location;

Description
2. Turn off the vehicle; A wonderful serenity has taken
possession of my entire soul

3. Leave the keys in the vehicle; and

4. Proceed to the nearest EMERGENCY
